About The Position

The Head Start Programs Teacher implements a child development program for children aged three to six, focusing on appropriate adult-child interactions, assessing child progress, adapting the environment and curriculum to meet diverse needs, and ensuring health, nutrition, and safety guidelines are followed. This role involves occasional evening work for trainings, family nights, and home visits, while maintaining professional standards and confidentiality. The teacher partners with families through home visits, conferences, and communication to support their involvement and share information on child development. They also assist in accomplishing program objectives by following the program plan, implementing Head Start Performance Standards, participating in observations and feedback, and promoting a cooperative early childhood philosophy. Additionally, the teacher is expected to promote staff development by attending training, engaging volunteers, and being familiar with Head Start Performance Standards and Fond du Lac Reservation policies. The role requires appropriate work attire, attendance at mandatory trainings, ensuring confidentiality of records, and maintaining a professional and responsive manner. Employees are expected to be flexible and assume other responsibilities as assigned. This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position with a 90-day probationary period.

Requirements

  • AA or BA in Early Childhood.
  • AA or BA in related field and teaching experience with preschool children
  • AA or BA in any field with additional coursework in the field of Early Childhood to be equivalent to a major and teaching experience with preschool children
  • AA or BA degree that is not in Early Childhood or a related field; additional course work in the field of Early Childhood or a CDA program is required; enrollment in an accredited college or CDA program must be completed within 6 months of hire and course work or CDA program must be completed within 3 years from hire.
  • CDA, AA or BA in Early Childhood or related field or the ability to qualify under Fond du Lac Reservation Child Care Requirements (a combination of education and experience) is required.
  • Meet the needs of all children including those at risk, those with special needs, those who are gifted, and those who are culturally diverse.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, data base and/or data entry, spreadsheets, and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations.
  • Some travel is required.

Responsibilities

  • Actively advocate and demonstrate appropriate adult - child interactions.
  • Assess child progress and needs using classroom and home visit observations.
  • Adapt the environment and curriculum to meet the needs of all children using developmentally appropriate practice and culturally responsive care giving.
  • Follow all health, nutrition and safety guidelines for an optimal classroom environment. Carry out activities related to health, e.g. toileting, diapering, safety in classroom, dental hygiene, and nutrition activities.
  • Work occasional evenings for trainings, family nights, home visits, conferences, and child care duties.
  • Maintain professional standards toward confidential relationships with all program participants and staff.
  • Implement positive behavior management techniques.
  • Share information via home visits, parent teacher conferences, parent committee meetings, and phone, personal, and written communication as necessary.
  • Welcome and inform families about how to be effective volunteers for our programs.
  • Support families by sharing information on child development.
  • Follow the program plan of the Program Manager and support staff.
  • Implement the activities as specified in Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Participate in classroom observations and receive feedback on classroom improvement from the Program Manager.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Promote cooperative and quality early childhood philosophy among staff, parents, collaborative partners and community.
  • Attend training and education opportunities as required.
  • Actively engage Foster Grandparents and volunteers within classroom.
  • Be familiar with Head Start Performance Standards and Fond du Lac Reservation policies.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Benefits

  • A total hiring bonus of $1,500 to be paid to new hires in three installments: $250 after 90 days of employment, $500 after 9 months of employment, $750 after 15 months of employment.
