About The Position

MagicSchool is hiring a Head of Trust & Safety to own safety for its AI platform serving teachers and students. The role covers AI-output safety, student-facing safeguards, trust with school districts, safety evaluations and monitoring, incident response, and collaboration with Legal on privacy and AI regulation. The position will build and lead a small team of 1–3 people initially, with the function expected to scale through 2027. The Head of Trust & Safety will make safety a core part of product infrastructure and development, establishing acceptance criteria during product scoping. The role also represents the company’s safety posture to districts and other external audiences, including through documentation, procurement responses, and communications.

Requirements

  • Have owned trust and safety or responsible AI for a consumer or youth-facing product at scale, including real incidents, policy decisions, and regulator engagement.
  • Have hands-on experience with LLM safety, including evaluations, classifiers, prompt or system-level guardrails, and red-teaming.
  • Be able to interpret evaluation results and determine what changes are needed.
  • Have made safety a velocity enabler by building guardrails as infrastructure so teams can ship faster with confidence.
  • Make judgment calls under ambiguity and own them publicly with districts and the executive team.
  • Be a strong writer of safety documentation, district-facing explainers, and incident communications.
  • Operate hypothesis-first and escalate one-way-door decisions quickly.
  • Have experience handling live incidents involving minors or vulnerable users.
  • Have a track record of building safety as product infrastructure rather than as a gate.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate safety tradeoffs clearly to executive and district-level audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • K-12 or youth-platform experience, such as at GoGuardian, Securly, Roblox, Discord, YouTube Kids, or Epic Games.
  • Familiarity with state AI-in-education frameworks and district procurement questionnaires.
  • Prior work with child-safety NGOs or standards bodies, such as Common Sense Media, NCMEC, Thorn, or ISTE.
  • Data and machine-learning fluency to partner directly with engineering on classifiers and evaluation pipelines.
  • Comfort representing safety externally at conferences, with the press, and before district boards.

Responsibilities

  • Own the safety of AI output for teachers and students, including policy, model-level guardrails, evaluations, red-teaming, and incident response.
  • Own the company’s trust posture with school districts through safety documentation, RFP and school-board responses, and alignment with state AI-in-education guidance.
  • Develop safety evaluations and monitoring as integral product infrastructure, and ensure each new tool has safety acceptance criteria established during scoping.
  • Own student-facing safety, including age-appropriate content, self-harm and crisis handling, and escalation paths to educators.
  • Run the safety incident process end to end and feed postmortem findings back into product and engineering.
  • Partner with Legal on COPPA, FERPA, state privacy laws, and emerging AI regulation; Trust & Safety owns operational implementation while Legal owns the legal position.
  • Build and lead a small team of 1–3 initially, scaling the function through 2027.

Benefits

  • Unlimited time off for full-time employees.
  • Choice of employer-paid health insurance plans.
  • Dental and vision coverage offered at very low premiums.
  • Stock options for every employee, vested over four years.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Monthly wellness stipend.
  • Work-from-home flexibility.
