Head of Internal Audit

10x Genomics•Pleasanton, CA

About The Position

10x Genomics is seeking an Internal Audit leader to own its SOX program and internal audit mandate. The role focuses on partnering with business process teams to establish effective internal controls, particularly management review controls that ensure data completeness and accuracy. As Finance and business teams redesign accounting workflows around AI, the Head of Internal Audit will help ensure SOX compliance is built into those workflows before systems go live, establishing evidence and review standards and providing confidence to the Audit Committee and external auditor. The position leads the internal audit function in collaboration with the Audit Committee, CFO, and company leaders. It will test internal controls, drive SOX compliance, and embed risk management across a fast-growing global company. The role is intended to strengthen governance, improve business processes, and protect operational and financial integrity while helping modernize accounting and finance. Audit is approached as a way to enable the business to move faster, rather than as a final checkpoint.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in internal audit, external audit, or risk advisory, including Big 4 experience.
  • At least 3 years leading audit or SOX functions at a public company, with experience reporting to the Audit Committee.
  • CPA, CIA, or CISA certification required.
  • Expertise in SOX 404, COSO, PCAOB, and SEC requirements.
  • Working knowledge of high-risk US GAAP areas for a product company, including revenue recognition, inventory, and equity compensation.
  • Track record of bringing automation and analytics into a SOX program, and hands-on ability to build with AI tools such as Claude Code or similar.
  • Strong understanding of IT general controls, ERP and cloud environments, and AI governance.
  • Bias for action and comfort with ambiguity; ability to question requirements, reduce low-value testing, and simplify processes before automating them.
  • Independent judgment and executive presence to communicate difficult messages to the Audit Committee and executives.
  • Ability to explain controls to engineers and automated workflows to Audit Committee members.

Responsibilities

  • Own the internal audit charter, annual risk assessment, and risk-based audit plan covering financial, operational, technology, and compliance risks.
  • Report quarterly to the Audit Committee on audit findings, remediation, and emerging risks.
  • Own the SOX 404 lifecycle, from scoping through remediation.
  • Develop the SOX program to move from sample testing toward full-population coverage and continuous monitoring, and partner with the external auditor to maximize reliance.
  • Build a methodology for auditing AI-enabled workflows, including change management, access, evidence, audit trails, and IT general controls around Oracle, RevPro, Snowflake, and AI tools.
  • Partner early with Finance, IT, Legal, and Operations on new systems, process redesign, and acquisitions so controls are embedded from the outset.
  • Deliver operational audits that improve cost, cycle time, and risk.
  • Build a lean audit team and co-sourcing model.
  • Maintain audit tests and analytics in GitHub and document them for the internal team and external auditor.
  • Measure audit function impact in coverage gained and hours recovered.

Benefits

  • Equity grants
  • Comprehensive health and retirement benefit programs
  • Annual bonus program or sales incentive program
