Head of Engineering
About The Position
Tutor is hiring a Head of Engineering to run the operational side of its engineering organization in partnership with the CTO. The CTO sets technical direction and leads longer-term bets; the Head of Engineering owns the roadmap, hiring, team structure, performance, and engineering practices. The engineering team currently has about 35 people across software and hardware and is expected to grow substantially. The role emphasizes speed, applying AI throughout engineering, and making work easier for the people doing it. The position reports to the CTO. Tutor is an AI robotics company that deploys its inventions directly into customer facilities on state-of-the-art hardware. Its mission is to develop general-purpose, generally intelligent robots, with research and deployment improving one another. The company describes its culture as technically excellent, collaborative, respectful, and empowering team members to have real impact. Everyone in Tutor’s R&D organization, including its leaders, holds the internal title Member of Technical Staff (MoTS). “Head of Engineering” is the external title used for recruiting and recognition outside the company.
Requirements
- Have led an engineering organization through significant growth.
- Have led software and hardware engineering, or software engineering at a company that ships hardware.
- Have worked closely with a technical founder or CTO.
- Be a strong operator in planning, hiring, and running a team.
- Bring AI into engineering practices and support the people advancing its use.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in robotics, manufacturing, or products deployed in the field.
- Experience building an organization from tens to hundreds of engineers.
Responsibilities
- Set quarterly engineering priorities and ensure delivery against business outcomes.
- Lead recruiting and build the engineering organization as the company scales.
- Set team structure, manage performance, and develop engineering leaders.
- Own engineering processes, with speed, AI, and ease of use as goals.
- Partner with the CTO on technical direction and with the leadership team on priorities.
- Run the operational side of the engineering organization.
