Head of Commercial & Industrial / Business Markets

Rhythm EnergyHouston, TX

About The Position

Rhythm is seeking a Head of Commercial & Industrial (C&I) to establish and lead its C&I business. This is a General Manager role with full Profit & Loss (P&L) responsibility, offering the authority to shape the business strategy and a position on the leadership team. The C&I business is a key strategic priority for Rhythm, aiming to diversify beyond its established residential retail energy business in Texas and the Northeast. This role will leverage Rhythm's existing strengths in brand, digital acquisition, supply chain, data operations, and capital to introduce innovative C&I energy products, including PowerShift, batteries, Virtual Power Plant (VPP)-adjacent offerings, and managed services. The approach will differ from traditional C&I models, focusing on a direct-led, digitally enabled, and product-differentiated strategy centered on customer experience, margin discipline, and innovative offers. The Head of C&I will be responsible for the overall strategy, product offerings, pricing, sales channels, customer acquisition, operations, team building, and P&L management, with the goal of scaling the C&I customer base into a significant business.

Requirements

  • Proven experience building or materially scaling a C&I business within a competitive energy supplier.
  • Deep knowledge of ERCOT; Texas competitive supplier experience is strongly preferred.
  • A clear track record of building businesses, including designing offers, setting up pricing, hiring teams, writing playbooks, and scaling a C&I book or business from early stage to material scale.
  • Fluency in C&I pricing, deal structuring, product structure, customer economics, and risk/margin tradeoffs.
  • Experience partnering closely with Commercial and Pricing functions on pricing, hedging, and risk management.
  • Experience building broker, partner, and direct or digital channel capabilities.
  • Previous P&L ownership or equivalent business accountability.
  • Executive presence with customers, brokers, partners, the board, and internal leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience selling to SMB and lower mid-market C&I customers.
  • A clear point of view on how to adapt innovative products like PowerShift, batteries, VPP-adjacent offerings, and managed services into compelling commercial offers.
  • Existing relationships within the ERCOT C&I broker, consultant, and partner community.
  • Experience in Northeast deregulated markets.
  • Experience operating in a high-growth, PE-backed, or entrepreneurial environment.
  • Experience evaluating or integrating C&I book acquisitions.

Responsibilities

  • Own the strategy and set segment priorities, starting with small businesses and expanding into the mid-market.
  • Define the business plan, capability roadmap, and operating cadence for C&I market entry, initially focusing on ERCOT and then expanding to Northeast deregulated states.
  • Build a direct, digitally enabled acquisition motion for Small and Medium Businesses (SMB) and mid-market customers, adapting Rhythm's residential playbook.
  • Define the C&I offer architecture and partner with the Commercial and Pricing team to develop pricing models, deal structures, risk parameters, margin guardrails, and custom pricing/quoting capabilities.
  • Lead the commercial launch of Rhythm's broader product platform, including PowerShift, distributed energy, and managed services, into the C&I market.
  • Build the channel mix, prioritizing direct acquisition, with brokers and partners playing a supporting role, and leveraging digital channels across both.
  • Define the customer qualification process, considering fit, credit quality, load profile, margin potential, term, and complexity.
  • Build the operating system for C&I, including the end-to-end customer journey, CRM, pipeline reporting, quoting workflows, pricing approvals, contract templates, credit checks, onboarding, account management, and performance dashboards.
  • Partner closely with Product, Tech, Commercial and Pricing, Finance, Legal, and Customer Operations to develop necessary workflows, tools, and capabilities.
  • Start lean and build the C&I team as the business grows, owning organizational design, hiring within budget, scorecards, and incentives.
  • Represent the C&I business within the leadership team, with the board, and externally.
  • Own the C&I P&L, with full authority to price, sign, hire, and operate within agreed margin targets and budget.
  • Be accountable for revenue, gross margin, customer acquisition cost, retention, credit quality, and progress against the business plan.
  • Evaluate and execute M&A and inorganic growth opportunities, such as book acquisitions and tuck-ins, as the business matures.

Benefits

  • General Manager role with full P&L ownership.
  • Seat at the leadership team.
  • Direct partnership with the CEO and executive team.
  • Access to an established platform including brand, digital acquisition engine, supply desk, customer operations, data infrastructure, and capital.
  • Opportunity to commercialize innovative products like PowerShift, batteries, VPP-adjacent products, and managed services.
  • Fast-paced, data-driven, test-and-learn culture.
  • Equity in a scaling business.
  • Authority to design and build the business.
