Head of Clinical Informatics

R1 RCMRemote, NY, NY
Onsite

About The Position

At R1, within our R37 AI Innovation Lab, we are building the first AI-native Healthcare Revenue Operating System: a connected platform that reasons over full medical records, payer logic, and financial workflows to automate medical coding, billing, and follow-up. Backed by real customers, real data, and real distribution, we operate on a national scale. Our agentic AI systems already power production workflows across 95 of the top 100 U.S. health systems, processing hundreds of millions of patient encounters each year. This is startup-level ownership with enterprise-level impact. If you want to build AI that ships, scales, and measurably improves how healthcare works, this is the place to do it. The Director of Clinical Informatics sits within the Data Platform organization, but operates broadly across product, engineering, AI, and customer-facing teams. It is a highly cross-functional, multi-stakeholder role that bridges engineering and product, ensuring that how we model data directly enables scalable product experiences and AI capabilities. This role acts as the connective layer between clinical reality, data systems, and product outcomes - owning the informatics strategy that underpins the platform.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in clinical/financial data, ontologies, and terminologies (e.g., SNOMED, ICD, CPT, LOINC, RxNorm)
  • Strong understanding of interoperability (FHIR/HL7) and data modeling at scale
  • Experience working closely with engineering and product teams on data-driven systems
  • Systems thinker who can translate ambiguity into scalable, practical solutions
  • Proven ability to operate across multiple stakeholders and influence direction

Responsibilities

  • Own computable knowledge systems
  • Develop and maintain structured artifacts: data models, ontologies, value sets, DRGs, and deterministic rules (e.g., payor policies)
  • Ensure scalability, versioning, and alignment with evolving standards
  • Build informatics platform capabilities
  • Lead development of core infrastructure (e.g., terminology services, knowledge tooling, semantic/graph layers, mapping APIs)
  • Partner with engineering to build, buy, or integrate solutions
  • Enable AI and data platform use cases
  • Provide “Informatics-as-a-service” across teams (data harmonization, EHR/claims integration, analytics, AI/agentic systems)
  • Embed with engineering and AI teams as needed to drive delivery
  • Bridge engineering and product
  • Translate complex data structures into usable product capabilities
  • Partner on roadmap, tradeoffs, and implementation decisions where data design impacts UX and outcomes
  • Define repeatable “informatics playbooks” for new customers and use cases
  • Lead standards and external engagement
  • Represent the company in HL7/FHIR, AMIA, CMS, and related forums
  • Influence evolving interoperability and quality standards
  • Establish governance and trust frameworks
  • Implement data governance, auditability, explainability, and responsible AI practices
  • Partner cross-functionally to support compliance and oversight
  • Build and lead the function
  • Hire and mentor a high-performing informatics team
  • Establish operating model, tooling, and best practices
