About The Position

Under general supervision, the Head Cook supervises the kitchen and cooking staff in a Transitional Housing setting, supporting the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village. The role oversees food preparation and service, staff proficiency in institutional cooking, kitchen cleanliness, compliance with nutrition, sanitation, and safety standards, and adherence to agency menu plans and applicable regulatory guidelines. The Head Cook also evaluates inventory and orders kitchen materials according to established purchasing protocols.

Requirements

• High school diploma, high school equivalency, or culinary school training.
• Food Protection Certificate issued by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
• At least two years of relevant experience as a cook in a restaurant or similar environment, such as the NYC Department of Homeless Services or another similar city-operated organization.
• Good understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with clients and staff.
• Availability to work a flexible schedule as needed in response to participant and staff needs.
• Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Provide food services supervision to cooks to build proficiency in institutional cooking.
• Supervise and maintain clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, equipment, and utensils.
• Monitor compliance with nutrition, sanitary regulations, and safety standards in work areas.
• Ensure food service operations comply with health and safety codes and adhere to the agency menu plan.
• Ensure breakfast, lunch, and dinner are prepared and served according to Department of Health and Department of Homeless Services regulatory guidelines.
• Evaluate inventory and order kitchen materials according to established purchasing protocols.
