About The Position

The Head Cross Country Coach is responsible for the leadership, development, and administration of the boys' and girls' cross country programs. At Evansville Christian School, this role transcends athletic instruction; the coach is a mentor-leader tasked with fostering a biblical worldview, cultivating servant leadership, and pursuing competitive excellence "for the glory of God rather than self" (Colossians 3:23).

Requirements

  • Completion of the NFHS "Coaching Cross Country" course and "Fundamentals of Coaching" is highly preferred.
  • Must hold current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Completion of NFHS Concussion in Sports and Heat Illness Prevention courses is required by Indiana law.
  • Deep understanding of IHSAA bylaws and cross country scoring/officiating rules.
  • A committed follower of Jesus Christ who is an active member of a local church.
  • Commitment to the mission of ECS: Empowering students to embrace a biblical worldview through spiritual and academic growth.
  • Ability to demonstrate "Christ-centered conflict resolution" as outlined in the ECS Athletic Handbook.
  • Ability to lead outdoor practices in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or run for extended periods to monitor athletes on diverse course terrains.

Nice To Haves

  • NFHS Certification: Completion of the "Coaching Cross Country" course and "Fundamentals of Coaching" is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate prayer and biblical devotionals into practices and meet-day routines.
  • Model Christ-like character, humility, and "servant of all" leadership (Mark 9:35) in interactions with athletes, parents, and officials.
  • Mentor student-athletes in their personal walk with Jesus, focusing on spiritual growth alongside physical conditioning.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive training program including aerobic conditioning, strength training, and injury prevention (NFHS standards).
  • Conduct daily practices that are organized, safe, and purposeful.
  • Instruct athletes on pacing, race strategy, and proper biomechanics for 5,000-meter (5K) competition.
  • Ensure full compliance with IHSAA Rule 8 regarding meet entries, uniforms, and scoring.
  • Maintain accurate records of student-athlete eligibility, physicals, and IHSAA "Rule 3" (Enrollment and Attendance) requirements.
  • Manage the team’s schedule (10-meet regular season limit) in coordination with the Athletic Director.
  • Oversee the care and inventory of school-issued uniforms and equipment.
  • Coordinate with the Middle school program/ coaches to plan meets and events.
  • Partner with parents through regular, transparent communication regarding schedules, expectations, and student progress.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Department to promote the program within the school and local community.
