About The Position

Colby College, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), is seeking a full-time Head Coach of Men's Tennis. The college boasts 32 intercollegiate sports competing at the Division III level, with a strong emphasis on campus recreation, club, and intramural sports. Over one-third of Colby's 2,300 students participate in intercollegiate sports, and nearly three-quarters are involved in fitness and recreation activities. The Men's Tennis program has a rich history, consistently reaching the NESCAC Tournament and earning numerous accolades. Colby has made significant investments in its athletic facilities, including the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center, which features state-of-the-art amenities, including indoor tennis courts. The college also offers a Peak Performance Program integrating sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, and sports sciences. Located in central Maine, Colby offers access to various outdoor recreational venues. The Head Coach will be responsible for the leadership, direction, instruction, supervision, and coaching of the men's tennis program, aiming for consistent top performance in the NESCAC and Division III nationally. This role includes recruiting high-achieving student-athletes, managing the program's budget, travel, and equipment, and supervising assistant coaches or volunteers. A key aspect of the role is building athletes of character who contribute positively to the classroom and community, upholding the values of the College and the department.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required.
Working knowledge of rules and regulations governing collegiate tennis.
Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
Capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and advance strategic planning.
Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of student athletes from varied backgrounds.
Ability to work weekends and nights.

Nice To Haves

Master’s degree preferred.
Experience working with a successful collegiate tennis environment preferred.
Successful track record of fostering and maintaining working relationships with various athletic constituents.

Responsibilities

Management and administration of an intercollegiate men's tennis program that competes regularly for NESCAC championships.
Create a dynamic and inclusive recruiting plan for the tennis program, focusing on high-achieving student athletes from diverse backgrounds.
Analyze performance and instruct athletes in game techniques and strategies for preparation and competition.
Develop student athletes of character committed to fostering a campus environment of respect and inclusion.
Demonstrate initiative to learn new functions to advance coaching skills and a commitment to excellence.
Mentor and coach future leaders by providing guidance, feedback, and support to maximize performance and establish a supportive environment for professional development.
Understand students’ academic needs, communicate with academic liaisons, identify issues, and provide direction and guidance.
Utilize resources such as money, time, technology, equipment, buildings, and people to meet the program's strategic goals.
Create strategies to successfully reach fundraising goals in collaboration with the director of athletics and the director of Friends of Athletics.
Enhance ongoing engagement with internal and external entities, including Friends of Colby Men’s Tennis, the C Club, and the greater Waterville community.
Exercise effective upward, downward, and horizontal communications with tact, courtesy, and respect.
Comply with all guidelines, rules, and regulations set forth by Colby College, the NESCAC, and the NCAA.
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of a diverse workforce to the college’s overall success.
Undertake a secondary responsibility within the Department of Athletics, depending on applicant qualifications.
