About The Position

We are seeking an energetic, dedicated, and team-oriented Men’s Basketball Head Coach to lead our program at the University of Maine at Farmington. As a mentor and strategist, you will be responsible for every aspect of the program, from high-stakes recruiting to the holistic development of our student-athletes. This role is pivotal in fostering a culture of academic excellence, competitive success, and personal growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3+ years of applicable coaching experience (a combination of equivalent education and experience will be considered).
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
  • A valid State of Maine driver’s license in (good standing per UMS standards).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to establish strong personal and professional relationships with all levels of staff and community members from diverse life experiences.
  • Team-first mentality with a proven track record of imparting sport-specific skills and broader life skills through athletics.
  • Proficiency in creating a training environment focused on the holistic growth, advocacy, and experience of the student-athlete.
  • Familiarity with NCAA and NAC standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated commitment to operating an inclusive program that values respect for the health, safety, and well-being of all individuals.
  • Ability to support and advocate for staff and student-athletes with varied identities and life experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible and effective in a fast-paced athletic environment.
  • Must be able to pivot strategies based on game-time analysis, adjust to shifting department priorities, and maintain a positive, solution-oriented mindset.
  • A collegial leadership style with a willingness to work as a member of a team and foster a team environment within the program.
  • Adept at learning and using new technology, software programs (like Front Rush), and general computer applications.
  • Strong skills in decision-making, planning, and organizing program priorities.
  • Ability to travel extensively, including evenings and weekends.

  • Master’s degree.
  • Intercollegiate coaching experience and a background as a collegiate basketball competitor.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and fundraising.
  • Managerial or supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in recruiting software (e.g., Front Rush) and budget management.
  • Certification in strength and conditioning.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of practice, training sessions, and game-day competitions as a teacher of skill and strategy.
  • Provide expert coaching and real-time strategy development during games.
  • Prepare and present detailed film breakdowns to help players sharpen their basketball IQ and performance.
  • Coordinate the team strength & conditioning/off-season training programs to maximize safe performance and minimize injury in collaboration with sports medicine staff.
  • Identify, recruit, and retain high-caliber student-athletes who align with the University’s values and mission.
  • Build lasting relationships with prospective athletes and their families via email, phone, and one-on-one meetings.
  • Inspire student-athletes to reach their maximum potential, ensuring they are retained through graduation.
  • Utilize recruiting platforms (e.g., Front Rush) to effectively manage the prospect pipeline and recruit/supervise student workers and team managers.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the men’s basketball program, including budget management and expense forecasting.
  • Organize all team schedules, practice rotations, travel logistics, and meals.
  • Lead fundraising initiatives to support program needs and maintain active, supportive relationships with program alumni.
  • Work effectively with assistant coaches and the broader Athletics Department team.
  • Operate the program in strict accordance with NCAA and North Atlantic Conference (NAC) bylaws.
  • Monitor and promote the academic achievement and personal well-being of all student-athletes.
  • Attend and participate in department trainings and engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices.
  • Provide event management support for other athletic programs during the fall and spring seasons.
