About The Position

The Medical University of South Carolina’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks an academically oriented Head and Neck/Endocrine Pathologist for a tenure-track faculty position in Charleston, South Carolina. The department is part of a tertiary care hospital with transplantation, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, and apheresis services. It has approximately $5 million in annual extramural funding and is consistently ranked in the upper half of U.S. pathology departments for National Institutes of Health funding. The successful candidate will participate in the busy ENT/Endocrine pathology services at MUSC Hospital, working with biopsy and resection specimens as well as general surgical pathology. The role includes general frozen-section coverage and shared general surgical pathology call. The pathologist will collaborate with clinicians and researchers, teach medical students, contribute to training pathology residents and ENT oncologic surgery fellows, and participate in the academic mission of the NCI-designed Hollings Cancer Center programs. The proportion of effort devoted to research, teaching, administration, and patient care will be tailored to the successful applicant’s experience and career goals. The department has 65 faculty members, including two in the Head and Neck Pathology/Endocrine Sections, and training programs with 21 residents and 10–12 fellows. It examines approximately 7,000 ENT surgical pathology accessions and 2,000 frozen sections annually. The position’s academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications, expertise, and accomplishments.
