About The Position

The HDD Driller is responsible for safely and efficiently operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground pipelines, conduits, and utilities in accordance with project specifications. This position plays a critical role in delivering high-quality trenchless utility installations while maintaining compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards. The HDD Driller works closely with the Project Manager, and field crews to ensure successful project execution.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on HDD drilling experience; experience in utility installation preferred.
  • Proven ability to operate HDD rigs and related equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Strong understanding of underground utility installation methods and bore planning.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Strong safety mindset with demonstrated commitment to safe work practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
  • Willingness to travel and work extended hours as project schedules require.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Operate HDD drilling equipment and support machinery to complete bore paths in accordance with project plans and tolerances.
  • Read and interpret project drawings, bore profiles, utility locates, and specifications.
  • Perform pre-job planning, including equipment inspections, drilling fluid management, and bore tracking.
  • Monitor drill path alignment, depth, and steering to avoid existing underground utilities and obstructions.
  • Oversee proper use and maintenance of drilling tools, mud systems, and associated equipment.
  • Coordinate daily activities with HDD crew members, including locator, mud mixer, and laborers.
  • Troubleshoot drilling issues such as loss of circulation, tool failures, or ground condition challenges.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and site-specific safety plans.
  • Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), tailgate meetings, and safety training.
  • Complete daily reports, bore logs, and production documentation as required.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the job site.
  • Support site restoration activities following drilling and installation.
  • Travel to project sites as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
