Hardware System EE Architect

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

The Home Hardware team seeks a Hardware Architect to define, architect, and build early-stage Apple home product concepts. This 0-to-1 role focuses on product exploration at the intersection of hardware, software, and user experience, working with cross-functional mechanical, software, controls, and perception engineers. The Home Hardware System EE Architect is responsible for electrical definition and feasibility studies for early-stage concepts. Work ranges from high-level system architecture to hands-on bench evaluation. The role involves researching and selecting sensors, compute architectures, power electronics, and electromechanical technologies, and driving electrical architecture from initial concept to a functioning system. The architect owns critical aspects of electrical architecture and implementation for systems combining real-time control, dynamic power loads, and multi-modal sensing. The role requires technical expertise, product intuition, and a systems-level mindset, while accounting for product-specific challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of industry experience in hardware design, specifically in architecture and R&D environments.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals across digital, analog, mixed-signal, and power delivery (DC-DC) design.
  • Proven experience in system-level architecture and component selection for embedded systems, consumer electronics, or mechatronics.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring up, debug, and validate mixed-signal designs.
  • Ability to take a methodical and insightful approach to data analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills; the posting’s description of this qualification is incomplete.

Nice To Haves

  • MS or PhD in electrical engineering or a similar field.
  • Experience leading teams through the product development cycle from concept development to production bring-up.
  • Experience architecting real-time control systems, synchronized sensor/actuator timing, and deterministic communication buses.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards and practices (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 61508, or equivalent).
  • Expertise in emerging sensing technologies and sensor design is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Define and own electrical system architecture across compute, power, actuation, and sensing subsystems.
  • Drive schematic design, PCB/flex layout direction, and board bring-up for main logic, motion control, and sensor boards.
  • Partner with mechanical, controls, and perception teams to architect motion and sensing solutions that meet performance, reliability, and safety targets.
  • Lead debug, characterization, and validation of mixed-signal designs across development, EVT, DVT, and PVT phases.
  • Anticipate integration risks across mechanical motion, thermal, EMI/EMC, and functional safety domains and drive them to resolution.
  • Influence product direction through data-driven technical recommendations and cross-functional leadership.
  • Conduct electrical definition and feasibility studies for early-stage concepts.
  • Research and select sensors, compute architectures, power electronics, and electromechanical technologies.
