About The Position

General Motors is seeking a high-performing Hardware Development Engineer to plan, develop, and execute fuel injector component and subsystem tests in a development facility. The role includes hands-on test bench work, data analysis, calibration support, and improving test efficiency through data reduction and virtualization of lab activities. It calls for creativity, initiative, independent judgment, and effective cross-organizational teamwork. The engineer will execute fuel injector development and validation testing across multiple engine programs, develop and run capable tests on fuel injector benches, diagnose test issues, and report status, risks, and issues to support program decisions. The role also involves creating and maintaining data post-processing tools, analyzing data to optimize test plans and support virtual model development, identifying data reduction and automation opportunities, and helping migrate lab activities to virtual methods. The position collaborates with facilities, technical specialists, calibration teams, hardware release engineers, and other stakeholders. It supports continuous improvement of bench-testing procedures and standard work, as well as test reduction and virtualization efforts. The engineer will also train and mentor new engineers and co-ops/rotators and provide technical guidance on fuel injector function, test methods, and data interpretation. The role is categorized as hybrid and is expected to be lab-based, with significant on-site time at GM’s Pontiac test facility. The selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week, or at another frequency set by their manager. On-site expectations and hybrid details will be defined by the hiring manager based on business needs. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role, and the position is not eligible for relocation benefits.

  • 4 or more years of experience in automotive engineering with engine development or testing.
  • Hands-on experience with test bench setup and testing.
  • Experience with engine function, architecture, and subsystems, especially the fuel injection system.
  • Hands-on experience with fuel injection system testing, such as flow, spray characterization, or durability testing.

Responsibilities

  • Execute fuel injector development and validation testing across multiple engine programs.
  • Develop, implement, and execute tests for hardware development and validation on fuel injector benches.
  • Lead diagnosis and resolution of issues during test setup, execution, and post-test investigations.
  • Track and report test status, issues, and risks to support program milestones and decision making.
  • Ensure testing complies with GM safety, quality, and procedural standards.
  • Create, maintain, and use post-processing tools such as MATLAB and Python to assure data quality and improve test efficiency.
  • Analyze data to optimize test plans, reduce test time, and support virtual model development and correlation.
  • Identify and implement data reduction opportunities, including standardizing data sets and automating routine analysis.
  • Contribute to migrating lab-based activities to virtual methods in partnership with analysis and virtualization teams.
  • Collaborate with facilities, technical specialists, calibration teams, hardware release engineers, and other stakeholders to improve processes and test efficiency.
  • Work with design, analysis, and program teams to identify opportunities to streamline, replace, or virtualize physical testing.
  • Support continuous improvement of standard work, procedures, and documentation for fuel injector bench testing.
  • Train, mentor, and develop new engineers and co-ops/rotators on bench operation, safety, and standard work.
  • Provide technical guidance on fuel injector function, test methods, and data interpretation.
