About The Position

Hitachi Rail Canada Inc. is seeking a Hardware Designer - Technical Specialist for their Toronto, Ontario location. This full-time role involves producing complex hardware application designs and equipment designs that meet engineering and railway signaling principles. The Technical Specialist will act as a subject matter expert and technical leader, resolving complex problems both internally and in the field. A strong understanding of SelTrac Signal Plans, SelTrac Radio equipment, railway infrastructure, and CENELEC and AREMA standards is crucial. The role also involves interpreting and writing requirements, preparing technical specifications, and utilizing CAD packages like Microstation and AutoCAD. Additionally, the Technical Specialist may perform Work Package Manager duties, assisting with project planning, timelines, and budget tracking.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary Technologist diploma or Electrical or Electronics Engineering degree.
  • 10 – 12 years of related work experience.
  • Proficient with the use of CAD tools (Microstation, AutoCad).
  • Proficient with Bills of Materials (SAP).
  • Proficient with Configuration Management.
  • Proficient with Hitachi Change Control Process (Clearquest).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good interpersonal and diplomatic skills to deal confidently, courteously, and correctly with people at any level within the organization, and the customer.
  • Well-developed verbal skills in English to interact effectively and professionally in a variety of forums.
  • Well-developed writing skills in English to prepare clear effective documents.
  • Good understanding of SelTrac Signal Plans and SelTrac Radio equipment.
  • Good knowledge of Railway infrastructure and deployment of trackside and equipment room assets within greenfield and brownfield deployments.
  • Demonstrates an advanced level of logical reasoning resulting in effective hardware application designs, products and processes.
  • High degree of familiarity with CENELEC and AREMA standards.
  • Possesses or has the ability to gain the Hitachi Competency Management System (CMS) Designer or Principles license.

Responsibilities

  • Produce complex Hardware Application designs/Bookwirings and equipment designs that meet requirements utilizing processes based on established engineering and railway signaling principles.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and technical leader within the team, internally and with the customer.
  • Lead technical decision making and provide technical direction within their area of expertise and across multiple projects.
  • Resolve complex problems, in house or in the field.
  • Interpret and write Requirements that provide traceability from high level customer designs to low level detailed design elements.
  • Proficient in technical writing of technical design specifications, scope of works (SoWs) and requests for proposals (RFPs).
  • Prepare specifications for hardware and/or software components.
  • Select an appropriate design approach.
  • Maximize the use of existing product designs.
  • When required, perform the role of a Work Package Manager on projects, collaborating with a team of 1 to 5 Designers.
  • Assist with project-related tasks, such as planning timelines and tracking budgets to ensure project goals are met.
  • Keep track of progress on all tasks assigned to the SID project team.
  • Ensure that all project tasks proceed according to schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements.
  • Ensure that all project deliverables are completed accurately and on time (as per project schedule).
  • Carry out all assigned work efficiently, with a minimum of supervision.
  • Generate accurate, supportable estimates for current departmental technology and providing estimates for technologies that are new to the department.
