Hardware Board Design Engineer

Hewlett Packard Enterprise•Sunnyvale, CA
•$140,500 - $285,000•Onsite

About The Position

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is seeking a Hardware Board Design Engineer to develop high-end routing platforms in collaboration with architects, product line managers, software engineers, test engineers, and New Product Introduction teams. The role contributes throughout product development, from concept through mass production and customer support. It is designated onsite, with an expectation of working primarily from an HPE office; the role requires at least two days per week in the Sunnyvale office. The engineer designs, analyzes, develops, modifies, and evaluates electrical and electronic parts, components, subsystems, algorithms, and integrated circuitry for hardware systems. The work includes feasibility studies, design-margin and validation analyses, empirical testing, architecture assessment, and evaluation of production materials, designs, and techniques. The role may also direct support personnel involved in detailed design, testing, and prototype fabrication. At this management level, the engineer applies subject-matter expertise to common and sometimes complex technical problems, recommends alternatives, exercises independent judgment, and may lead projects or assist lower-level professionals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of experience with board design.
  • Solid proficiency in electrical circuit and schematic design.
  • Strong experience designing boards with embedded Intel or AMD CPUs.
  • Strong experience with high-speed memory interfaces such as DDR5.
  • Strong experience designing and debugging boards with interfaces such as PCIe, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and clocks.
  • Knowledge of the role BIOS and UEFI play in CPU board design, bring-up, and testing.
  • Knowledge of systems design considerations across several areas, including software, firmware, PCB layout, signal integrity, mechanical, thermal, power, EMI compliance, manufacturability, testability, MTBF, and COGS.
  • Awareness of PCB stack-up techniques for multilayer, high-speed printed circuit boards.
  • Hands-on experience and skilled debugging proficiency using lab measurement equipment, including a high-speed oscilloscope.
  • Strong interest in building hardware projects, solving challenging problems, and understanding how things work.
  • Excellent communication skills in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Ability to work at least two days per week in the Sunnyvale office.

Nice To Haves

  • Capable Python programming and scripting skills.
  • Familiarity with FPGA operation, debugging, and reading Verilog code.
  • Knowledge of CPU-subsystem security considerations such as PQC, TPM, hardware root of trust, secure boot, and attestation.
  • Hands-on experience with a PCIe protocol analyzer and I2C debugging test equipment.
  • Experience using Cadence Allegro PCB Designer and Cadence System Capture.
  • Experience in a Unix/Linux environment.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in product feasibility and definition.
  • Own hardware design and hardware testing, including specifications, schematics, bills of materials, prototype lab bring-up and maintenance, hardware test plans, and reports.
  • Collaborate with signal integrity, power, thermal, PCB design, mechanical, DFM/DFT, and lab technician teams.
  • Review and approve test reports and support EDVT, MDVT, NEBS, HALT, Safety, and EMC teams.
  • Participate in defining diagnostics tests for manufacturing and development.
  • Train and support manufacturing, customer support, and sustaining teams.
  • Collaborate with software, test, and diagnostics engineering.
  • Work with the program manager and engineering lead to provide project status.
  • Work with component engineering and commodity managers on external component selection and qualification.
  • Interface with external component suppliers on implementation and debugging.
  • Coordinate flexibly with engineering teams across geographies.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, design-margin and validation analyses, and empirical testing on new and modified designs.
  • Assist in architecture development and assessment.
  • Evaluate the reliability of materials, properties, designs, and techniques used in production.
  • May direct support personnel preparing detailed designs, design tests, and prototype fabrication.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits supporting physical, financial, and emotional wellbeing for employees and their loved ones.
