Hardware Applications Engineer

Marvell Technology•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

The Hardware Applications Engineer resolves customer hardware and platform issues and supports customer design enablement, bring-up, and manufacturing production for Marvell Ethernet switching products. The role requires working knowledge of major computer-industry standards, including PCIe, Ethernet, and other interfaces. It involves debugging Ethernet Layer 1 issues involving SerDes and MAC/PHY, as well as other board interfaces, and conducting schematic and layout reviews of customer designs. The engineer works with customers and internal cross-functional teams to develop and communicate solutions. They collaborate with board and ASIC designers, SerDes controller designers, program management, board vendors, and component vendors; create hardware design guidelines, application notes, and technical bulletins; and provide PCB stack-up recommendations informed by available fabrication materials and technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and 5–10 years of related professional experience; or a Master’s degree and/or PhD in those fields with 3–5 years of experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present and clearly articulate solutions to customers.
  • Previous experience as an Application Engineer or in an equivalent customer-interacting role is required.
  • Expertise in high-speed Ethernet SerDes interfaces, including NRZ and PAM-4 100G.
  • Expertise in Ethernet physical layer (Layer 1), including SerDes, MAC, and PCS, and debugging Layer 1 interoperability issues.
  • Strong background in signal integrity, power integrity, electromagnetics, thermal, multi-lane crosstalk analysis, and RF applications related to IC package and PCB design.
  • Experience using HyperLynx, Ansoft SIWave and HFSS, ADS, Sigrity, PowerSI and PowerDC, Cadence Allegro, and Polar stack-up tools.
  • Ability to perform schematic and layout reviews effectively.
  • Experience with at least one scripting language: Python, Perl, or Unix shell.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in MATLAB and Python.
  • Ability to handle servers (Windows/Linux), oscilloscopes, traffic generators (Ixia/Spirent/Xena), environmental chambers, thermal heads, and Keysight VNA/TDR.
  • Ability to program high-speed/optics modules and establish links with modules such as LR, SR, ZR, ZR4, and AECs.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve customer hardware and platform issues and support design enablement, bring-up, and manufacturing production.
  • Debug Ethernet Layer 1 issues involving SerDes and MAC/PHY, including analyzing signal strength and SerDes eyes and reviewing and tuning signal-integrity parameters.
  • Debug other board interfaces, including PCIe, I2C, and MDIO.
  • Review customer schematics and layouts and provide feedback.
  • Interact with hardware designers and write hardware design guidelines, application notes, and technical bulletins.
  • Coordinate with board designers, ASIC and SerDes controller designers, program management, board vendors, and component vendors to understand board design parameters.
  • Generate PCB stack-up recommendations based on the capabilities of available board fabrication materials and technologies.
  • Communicate solutions effectively to customers, considering strategic and tactical aspects, and work with internal cross-functional teams to deliver solutions.

Benefits

  • Eligible to participate in bonus and equity plans, including a new-hire equity grant and annual equity refreshers.
  • Employee stock purchase plan with a 2-year look back.
  • Family support programs.
