About The Position

This role supports Experimental Hall B by fabricating, assembling, installing, and maintaining mechanical, vacuum, cryogenic, and beam line systems used in scientific research. Responsibilities include interpreting technical drawings, performing preventive and corrective maintenance, operating industrial equipment such as cranes and forklifts, and assisting with troubleshooting to ensure safe and efficient operations. The position also requires coordination with the Hall technical team, completion of mandatory safety training, on‑call or overtime availability, and providing technical support to staff, users, and students.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools
  • Skill to operate forklifts, truck and trailer, overhead cranes and aerial platforms in accordance with Jefferson Lab written policies, our EH&S manual and industry standards.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work well within a team.
  • Ability to easily adapt to a changing work environment.
  • Available to occasionally work shifts or overtime as needed and be part of a rotational on-call schedule.
  • Comprehension of mechanical drawings, for example utilizing conventional machine tools such as drill presses and band saws to fabricate and assemble unique parts for Hall B experiments.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe and efficient equipment troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Install and maintain vacuum systems, beam line components and cryogenic transfer systems for nitrogen and helium.
  • Operate cranes, forklifts, trucks with trailers, and aerial platforms.
  • Responsible for the installation, removal, preventative and corrective maintenance of experimental equipment.
  • Read and interpret drawings in areas such as electronics, mechanical, and cryogenic systems.
  • Provide technical support for staff, users, and college students conducting research in Experimental Hall B.
  • Supervise or guide individuals from other groups working in the Hall.
