About The Position

The Guidance and Control Systems Engineer II will work in JPL’s Guidance and Control Section within the Mechanical & Control Systems Division, supporting the Europa Clipper project as part of the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) Operations team. The role involves analyzing and operating advanced GN&C systems and contributing to their development and operation. The engineer will also coordinate validation and documentation of system performance before delivery to customers. The section performs systems engineering, design and analysis, hardware development and procurement, testing, and operations support for deep-space, Earth-orbiting, and astrophysics missions. Its research and technology development includes autonomous guidance, navigation, and control for applications such as precision landing, space rendezvous, formation flying, and precision pointing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline with at least 3 years of related experience; or a master’s degree in a technical discipline with at least 1 year of related experience; or a Ph.D. in a technical discipline.
  • Technical background in modern guidance, estimation, and control applied to aerospace systems.
  • Ability to translate problems into concrete, executable plans and drive them to completion with minimal oversight.
  • Proven team player and effective leader with excellent communication, interpersonal, verbal, and presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience researching and developing advanced GN&C systems for deep-space exploration applications.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry or academic practices and standards in precision optical sensor pointing, spacecraft instrument disturbance rejection, instrument pointing systems, and GN&C systems for entry.
  • Understanding of principles, theories, concepts, and techniques in high-precision pointing systems.
  • Experience designing, analyzing, implementing, calibrating, verifying, and simulating complex and advanced GN&C systems for on-orbit or deep-space applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, assess, and test spacecraft commands for G&C needs and to support science objectives.
  • Analyze, simulate, and assess complex performance at the G&C subsystem level.
  • Work with spacecraft engineers and science team members to solve cross-discipline problems.
  • Develop and implement detailed subsystem test and verification plans and procedures.
  • Facilitate specialist engineers’ work to develop integrated concepts.
  • Develop tools and automations to improve the robustness and capabilities of the GN&C team.
  • Help develop and operate GN&C systems, and coordinate validation and documentation of their performance before delivery to customers.
