About The Position

Backblaze is seeking a Growth Marketing Director to own the self-serve revenue engine end-to-end. This role encompasses top-of-funnel acquisition strategy, product-led growth, activation, and expansion. The Director will operate with cross-functional authority across Product, Engineering, Marketing Ops, and their paid acquisition agency. This is a leadership role focused on driving new user acquisition and growth for a developer-centric infrastructure company.

Requirements

  • Experience in a developer-centric infrastructure company, cloud infrastructure, or IaaS, with a technical customer base.
  • Proven experience building a PLG motion, including designing product qualification logic, activation funnels, and self-serve to sales-led handoffs.
  • Strong acquisition instinct, with a focus on traffic and top-of-funnel issues.
  • Product sense, with the ability to write credible briefs, push back on engineering tickets, and build business cases for product investment without a dedicated PM.
  • Understanding of developer channels such as Reddit, Hacker News, dev communities, technical content, GitHub presence, and DevRel-adjacent programs as acquisition channels.
  • Data fluency, with comfort in owning and presenting signups, activation rates, and conversion metrics alongside strategy.
  • Ability to influence without authority, driving cross-functional action through partnership and persuasion.
  • Experience directing a paid acquisition agency (not just overseeing spend).
  • Background working in a post-IPO company navigating both efficiency and growth mandates.

  • Familiarity with AI/ML infrastructure, data pipeline tooling, or the AI builder ecosystem.
  • Experience building out a growth team or function from scratch.

Responsibilities

  • Own organic and paid acquisition strategy across all channels, including direct oversight of the paid acquisition agency, setting strategy, budget allocation, and performance expectations.
  • Drive developer community acquisition across Reddit, Hacker News, dev-focused communities, technical content, GitHub presence, and DevRel-adjacent programs.
  • Own the PLG motion: product qualification logic, activation funnel design, self-serve to sales-led handoff design, and expansion trigger strategy.
  • Work directly with Product and Engineering to prioritize self-serve improvements and advocate for PLG in planning cycles.
  • Own the corporate narrative for the AI/ML segment and translate it into channel strategy, content, and partnerships targeting strategic markets.
  • Identify and develop go-to-market programs for key strategic ICPs: developer tools integrations, community presence, co-marketing, and technical content.
  • Own north star KPIs across the full funnel.
  • Partner with BI to build and maintain PLG dashboards.
  • Drive weekly and monthly reporting across the organization.
  • Work across external agencies, the Marketing Ops team, and Customer Success teams to facilitate the full lifecycle of customers acquired through the self-serve engine.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to build the case for product investment and engineering capacity.
