About The Position

The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for leading engaging and effective group fitness classes, ensuring a positive and safe experience for all participants. This role involves preparing and delivering class routines, managing class attendance, and promoting YMCA programs and services. The instructor is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism, customer service, and adherence to YMCA values.

Requirements

  • Current CPR and AED certifications are required.
  • Instructor's certification in AFAA, ACE, ACAM or the YMCA is required.
  • Must complete a successful criminal background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Take attendance in every class and ensure all members sign in.
  • Be in the room 5 minutes prior to the start of class.
  • Start and end all classes on time.
  • Put away all materials used for the class after each session.
  • Find a substitute if unable to teach a class and notify the group exercise coordinator/wellness director.
  • Participate in and support all “Annual Campaign” activities and events.
  • Introduce yourself at the beginning of every class.
  • Take heart rates twice during the course of the class.
  • Demonstrate modifications, remind participants to modify, and encourage individuals to work at their own pace.
  • Keep participants moving.
  • Teach according to the description of the class.
  • Make beginner participants feel comfortable, discuss heart rate ranges, and spend time with them on technique, choreography, and proper form.
  • Attend all staff meetings and new employee orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • Promote the Y’s programs and services as well as other classes offered on the group fitness schedule.
  • Be courteous to all members and staff.
  • Learn members’ names and use at every opportunity.
  • Be available to members.
  • Be aware of opportunities to assist members.
  • Correct members in a courteous and respectful manner when exercising incorrectly.
  • Be approachable, show sincere interest and enthusiasm.
