About The Position

Responsible for instructing, inspiring, and motivating participants to improve their health and fitness-related behaviors through a series of movements and exercises. This role involves instructing aquatic or land group exercise classes for various age groups and skill levels, assisting in programming, and maintaining class records. The instructor must ensure participant safety by adhering to center policies and procedures, and guidelines set by program certifying agencies. They may also be required to assist with class coverage as needed.

Requirements

  • Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult CPR, AED & First Aid Certification designated timeframe outlined for program (online training is not valid).
  • If Group Exercise Instructor, must have valid certification for specific group exercise format or nationally recognized Group Exercise Instructor Certification, or related and recognized certification, OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws parks and recreation, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of leisure, social, health and legal needs of individuals with disabilities at all age levels.
  • Knowledge of CPR/AED first aid procedures.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, exercise physiology, and physical fitness training principles.
  • Skill in problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill at the beginner level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Skill in leading and instructing.
  • Ability to move rhythmically to the beat of the music, and incorporate optimal usage of cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitional movements from one pattern to another.
  • Ability to maintain the proper technique, endurance, and level of energy needed to complete each fitness class.
  • Ability to stay within a scope-of-practice of qualifications when giving advice and recommendations to class participants.
  • Ability to take charge and identify solutions quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing work environment to facilitate/accomplish needed activities.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports.
  • Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must provide proof of legally purchased music license for group exercise instruction.
  • If Group Exercise Instructor, must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • If Group Exercise Instructor, must maintain valid certifications for course instruction, including continuing education subscriptions necessary to ensure certification validation.
  • If Group Exercise Instructor, must maintain valid specialty certifications for the specific group exercise format or a nationally recognized Group Exercise Instructor Certification.
  • Applicants must be lawfully authorized to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • If Group Exercise Instructor, must be at least seventeen (17) years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct aquatic or land group exercise classes to a wide variety of age groups/skill levels.
  • Assist in programming, as appropriate.
  • Submit class outlines and workouts to leadership, as appropriate.
  • Maintain current class records, including but not limited to, attendance, accident, and incident reports.
  • Ensure the safety of class participants by adhering to center policies, procedures, and following guidelines set by program certifying agency, as appropriate.
  • Report safety concerns to leadership immediately, including but not limited to, participant behaviors, facility and/or equipment concerns.
  • Assist with class coverage outside of regularly scheduled classes, as needed.
  • Be available fifteen (15) minutes before and after scheduled class for set-up/take-down of course equipment, and answer participant questions.
