About The Position

The Groundskeeper maintains athletic grounds and participates in all types of grounds maintenance to ensure playing surfaces and other areas meet established standards. The position supports Sun Devil Athletics by helping provide high-quality athletic facilities and follows NCAA and Big 12 rules and regulations, as well as department, university, and Arizona Board of Regents policies and procedures.

Work includes maintaining athletic fields and grasses, preparing fields for competition, removing debris and litter, watering and irrigation, applying fertilizers and pesticides, operating and maintaining groundskeeping tools and equipment, and performing maintenance and minor repairs. The role regularly involves outdoor work in a desert environment and operation of groundskeeping equipment and, as assigned, motor vehicles. Daily work is reviewed regularly for quality, aesthetics, and quantity.

Requirements

• High school diploma and two years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment or field, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training demonstrating comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Knowledge of proper operation, use, and care of grounds-maintenance equipment, tools, and procedures.
• Knowledge of techniques for planting and maintaining grasses, plants, trees, and shrubs suited to the area.
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices for proper care and maintenance of grass areas.
• Knowledge of safety precautions and procedures for applying chemical treatments and using equipment.
• Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting procedures.
• Knowledge of calculations used to measure, mix, and prepare chemical treatments.
• Skill in operating grounds-maintenance equipment.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read and follow directions and work effectively as a team member.
• Valid U.S. driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment if driving is required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain athletic fields, grasses, and other grounds.
• Measure and paint fields for athletic competition.
• Remove debris from stairs and walkways, rake leaves, mow lawns, pick up litter, and empty outdoor trash and recycling cans.
• Water fields and lawns and perform irrigation activities and repairs.
• Apply fertilizer and pesticide treatments, and spray for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals as required.
• Operate and maintain groundskeeping tools, equipment, and machines, including large power lawn mowers, edgers, hand tools, and large vehicles used for grounds maintenance and landscaping.
• Operate pickup trucks and trailers to haul materials and remove trash and debris.
• Perform maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools.
• Adhere to NCAA and Big 12 rules and regulations and applicable department, university, and Arizona Board of Regents policies and procedures.
