About The Position

Abri Veterinary Hospital is seeking a compassionate and experienced groomer to join their AAHA accredited veterinary hospital team. The ideal candidate will be patient, detail-oriented, dependable, and passionate about providing excellent care for both pets and their owners. The Groomer is responsible for bathing, brushing, nail trimming and grinding, and engaging with clients to understand their expectations and desired outcomes. This role also ensures grooming areas are clean, sanitized, safe, and secure. The position reports to the Practice Manager.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years grooming experience preferred
  • Experience grooming both dogs and cats
  • Comfortable handling pets of all temperaments, sizes, and breeds
  • Experience working with senior pets, anxious pets, and pets with special needs
  • Comfortable grooming pets who may require sedation under veterinary supervision
  • Knowledge of breed-specific cuts, coat types, brushing techniques, and proper grooming standards
  • Ability to recognize skin, coat, ear, or health concerns and communicate concerns to the veterinary team
  • Must have own professional grooming tools, including: Clippers, Blades, Scissors/shears, Brushes/combs, Nail tools, Other personal grooming equipment needed to perform services
  • Ability to maintain clean, organized, and safe grooming equipment
  • Knowledge of proper sanitation and infection control practices

  • Experience in a veterinary grooming environment is a plus

  • Ability to safely restrain and handle pets during grooming procedures

Responsibilities

  • Admit patients, noting client instructions for quality outcomes, including contact information and pick-up time.
  • Determine any veterinary services required during the client's visit.
  • Determine care required based on individual patient needs and circumstances, in accordance with hospital operating instructions.
  • Observe patient appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, and discontent.
  • Part patient's hair to check for ticks, fleas, red, sore or inflamed areas, and any lumps.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury, or unusual activity to veterinary technicians or veterinarians.
  • Handle patients appropriately and restrain hard-to-control patients as needed.
  • Perform bathing services, including shampooing and drying.
  • Perform grooming services, including brushing, clipping, hand scissoring, trimming, and shaping the patient’s coat.
  • Shape hair using knowledge of patient characteristics, grooming techniques, styles, and client instructions.
  • Stay current on new techniques and trends clients are looking for.
  • Provide medication (when instructed) and general cleansing, parasite control baths, pedicures, medicated dips (when instructed), and ear cleansing, as required for each patient.
  • Apply technical knowledge of products and medications sold, including dietary products.
  • Explain and educate clients on products and answer questions regarding product purchase/use.
  • Perform work according to established methods specified in the practice procedure manual or following special instructions.
  • Perform general maintenance of grooming room and yard; clean and disinfect cages, tubs, grooming tables, and yard at least once daily.
  • Vacuum and mop floors; empty trash; clean clipper blades, scissors, and brushes after use; perform monthly dryer and clipper maintenance.
  • Deliver final groomed patient to client and ensure satisfaction.
  • Address concerns appropriately.
  • Where applicable, train, supervise, and assist the Grooming Assistant in their performance of a variety of service functions.
  • Set performance standards and monitor performance.
  • Conduct timely performance evaluations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
