About The Position

The Pet Stylist provides professional grooming services to customers’ pets, ensuring each pet receives exceptional care and leaves looking and feeling its best. The role’s primary purpose is to perform expert-level grooming services while prioritizing pets’ safety, comfort, and well-being and delivering a high level of customer service and satisfaction to pet parents. The position is an opportunity for groomers with proven technical experience to develop their grooming expertise and individual productivity. Additional tasks may be assigned by the Grooming Salon Leader, Solutions Manager, or Store General Manager.

The role works under moderate to limited supervision. Most duties are conducted indoors in the grooming salon, with substantial direct contact with pet parents and their dogs, as well as time working with other salon partners. The environment can be noisy and wet. The work requires bending, kneeling, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 30 pounds as necessary. Some cleaning or maintenance duties may involve exposure to heights and use of a two-step ladder or other support tools.

Requirements

• Successful completion of Petco’s Pet Stylist Apprentice program, or previous professional grooming experience and/or completion of a technical grooming training program.
• Results-driven, with commitment to productivity, performance, and ownership of the role in the grooming salon.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to execute grooming services accurately and to high standards.
• Genuine passion for animals and desire to continue a career in pet grooming.
• Expert knowledge of dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues, and behaviors.
• High proficiency in breed-specific cuts, styling techniques, and grooming standards.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with pet parents and grooming team members.
• Ability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
• Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by the Pet Care Center’s grooming schedule.
• Ability to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation, including bending, kneeling, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 30 pounds as necessary.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional grooming services, including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning, following pet parents’ instructions, breed standards, and company policies and procedures.
• Operate and maintain grooming instruments, including clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers.
• Prioritize the well-being and safety of animals in the salon; monitor pets for signs of discomfort, illness, or injury and promptly report concerns to pet owners and store management.
• Evaluate each pet’s individual needs, including coat type, skin conditions, and temperament.
• Interact professionally and effectively with pet parents, provide customer service, respond to grooming inquiries, offer recommendations, and resolve questions or concerns in a timely manner.
• Educate pet parents and provide tailored recommendations for grooming maintenance, at-home care practices, and products that promote pets’ well-being.
• Maintain a clean and safe grooming area and salon; disinfect and sanitize tools and equipment; perform daily and weekly cleaning and other assigned maintenance in accordance with hygiene and sanitation policies, including cleaning air filters, vents, and drains.
• Apply Petco grooming policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure safety, quality, consistency, and upkeep of standards in the grooming salon.
• May train, support, and supervise entry-level trainees in the absence of a Grooming Salon Leader.
• Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Grooming Salon Leader, Solutions Manager, or Store General Manager.
