About The Position

The Monadnock Food Co-op in Keene, NH, is looking for a Perishables Replenisher to join their purchasing team. This role involves managing inventory in a cold environment, curating a selection of sustainable, healthy, and delicious products, and building relationships with vendors and local producers. The position requires organization, attention to detail, and a contribution to a community-focused food system. The job involves ordering, receiving, pricing, and stocking perishable and frozen food items, selecting stock based on industry trends and inventory movement, and making decisions in conjunction with the Grocery Manager. A significant amount of time is spent in the cooler, requiring tolerance to cold. Knowledge of current trends in the natural and organic foods industry, including gluten-free products, is essential. Prior buying experience is preferred. Daily tasks include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. The purpose of this position is to replenish, order, receive, manage inventory, and stock sub-department items while meeting sales and customer service objectives. Replenishment Buyers, with assistance from Marketing and Merchandising, also organize and carry out product samplings.

  • Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Write simple correspondence.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one or small group situations to customers and employees.
  • Use a telephone, printer, computer, copier, MS Office and web browsers.
  • Ability to order products on-line, via the telephone, and in person.
  • Operate equipment such as hand trucks, U boats, pallet jack.
  • Use tools such as box cutters and pricing tools.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement and volume.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of retail purchasing and merchandising, preferably for a department in a natural food store.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of current trends in the natural foods industry.
  • Must be available for the schedule: Tuesday through Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior buying experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of specialization in particular department (e.g., beer and wine types and flavors).

Responsibilities

  • Order, receive, price and stock perishable and frozen food items while building strong positive relationships with vendors.
  • Select stock based on industry trend and understanding of inventory movement.
  • Make decisions in conjunction with a close working relationship with the Grocery Manager.
  • Keep the shelves consistently and abundantly stocked with rotating products.
  • Ensure all new items brought in by Merchandising Manager are accurately entered into New Item Spreadsheet per MFC guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain Department’s established discontinued practices.
  • Consult with Department Manager about Surplus inventory or soon to be out-of-date and what to do with it.
  • Track shrink and adjust ordering to reduce losses.
  • Report slow-moving items to the Merchandising Manager.
  • See that all proper shrink procedures are followed for any unsellable items (recalled, out of date, damaged products).
  • Participate in all inventory preparation and counts as directed by management.
  • Meet ordering deadlines of all distributors and vendors.
  • Monitor all delivery schedules and notify receivers of any changes.
  • Maintain enough inventory to maximize sales and turnover, keeping overstock to a minimum.
  • Ensure promotional product is available on any endcap displays and its home location, moving product as needed.
  • Ensure adequate and timely supply of promoted products.
  • Identify suppliers and research new or alternative sources of supply in response to long-term out-of-stocks and discontinued items.
  • Ensure damaged, mis-picked and mis-ordered items are handled using established credit procedures.
  • Follow up to be sure that credit is received from suppliers where applicable for returned or low-quality product.
  • Continually refine plan for back-stock storage according to procedures, including proper rotation, fronting, labelling and organization in its designated place.
  • Communicate changes or adjustments and ensure clerks understand and follow plan.
  • Monitor competitors’ pricing to ensure competitive prices and make suggestions to our pricing department as needed.
  • Review departmental financial reports (sales, margin, turns) with the Merchandising and Department managers.
  • Organize and carry out product samplings.
