About The Position

Leads the Grocery department and its staff, overseeing financial stewardship, customer service, department conditions, merchandising, food safety, work safety, communication, hiring, training, and performance management. Ensures the department provides an exceptional customer shopping experience with the highest level of service and product knowledge. Requirements

  • 18 years or older
  • Previous ordering/inventory management experience required.
  • Basic to intermediate math and computation skills required.
  • Skills to plan, prioritize and delegate work.
  • Skills to train, coach and hold staff accountable.
  • Skills to read, understand and follow through on verbal and written instructions.
  • Previous customer service, food service, retail or grocery experience required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with MS Office with skills to learn new programs and technology.
  • Skills to manage financial results, including labor, sales and profit margin.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous retail management experience in a high-volume environment preferred.
  • Grocery experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge with POS, inventory or other retail specific software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and provides oversight to all areas of the department logistics and staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining excellent department conditions, including appearance, cleanliness, signage, staffing and service levels.
  • Models friendly and attentive customer service, coaches staff, recognizes accomplishments and identifies areas of opportunity.
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of labor, sales and margin goals and factors that influence them, meeting these goals and developing plans when results do not meet expectations.
  • Demonstrates creativity in merchandising and utilization of products to increase sales and minimize waste.
  • Receives and unloads merchandise; checks quality, count and condition, communicating any issues to management and the merchandising team.
  • Stocks and rotates products with attention to product quality and expiration dates.
  • Maintains the organization, rotation and cleanliness of back stock areas.
  • Orders grocery products according to anticipated sales and seasonal needs, and trains staff to write orders consistent with department goals and standards.
  • Maintains professional vendor relationships.
  • Develops and executes merchandising plans to promote seasonal/ad item/holiday products, drive sales, and create an optimal customer shopping experience.
  • Plans for weekly ads, events, and holidays using tools and reports, and works with store management to understand and respond to current store trends.
  • Builds, displays, and arranges department products to make attractive presentations, highlighting featured/unique/seasonal items.
  • Handles escalated difficult customer service situations and seeks solutions to delight the customer, training and coaching staff to do the same.
  • Coordinates with operations and merchandising departments to plan and conduct in-store tastings.
  • Ensures customer special orders are accurately placed and delivered.
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of products in the department, industry trends, and general understanding of culinary terminology, product labeling, and common dietary restrictions, sharing this knowledge with customers and staff.
  • Coaches the department to maintain appropriate, accurate, and organized inventory and back stock, handling damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.
  • Ensures that the department adheres to company invoice, credit, transfers, and inventory procedures.
  • Plans, leads, and analyzes inventory.
  • Leverages resources and labor to maximize efficiency without compromising quality and service standards.
  • Partners with the department manager to manage all department staff, including performance management and review writing, scheduling, and providing ongoing training, coaching, development, and feedback.
  • Assesses, prioritizes, and delegates tasks and production.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic Human Resources concepts and works with store-level resources to increase knowledge.
  • Establishes and maintains effective verbal and written communication systems.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.
