About The Position

This position focuses on print and digital design, with an emphasis on supporting the Public Works’ Transportation Planning and Programming Division team of transportation planning professionals to institute plans, programs and projects. This position will advance priorities and projects in line with the City’s Transportation Action Plan, Racial Equity Framework for Transportation, Vision Zero commitment, Complete Streets policy, and mode shift campaign, As You Go MPLS.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Mass Communication, Journalism or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience working as a graphic designer or related experience.
  • Practical experience in graphic design, webpage building, online publishing, and print production.
  • A design portfolio uploaded to your application is required. Your attachment must be a PDF consisting of no more than 10 pages.
  • Advanced skills in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.).
  • Familiar with HTML/CSS for basic understanding and implementation of web edits.
  • Strong print design skills, including experience with the printing process and the ability to handle print production logistics.
  • Familiarity with web design, including knowledge of HTML/CSS or web basics and experience designing and optimizing web graphics (banners, icons, photos, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral, with an ability to work in a team environment.
  • Independent and creative thinker who can take initiative and advance new ideas.
  • Proficient in ArcGIS and/or other mapping software such as GeoMaster.
  • Proficient in Office 365 (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
  • Experience with SketchUp and/or other rendering software including Beyond Typicals, Remix, etc.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple design projects within deadlines and budgets.
  • A good understanding of brand consistency and the ability to work with internal teams to maintain brand guidelines across various media.
  • Comfort with evolving accessibility guidelines and experience creating accessible products per latest ADA guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Uphold the City’s branding guidelines and standards across all media and platforms. Provide quick turnaround of deliverables, working within brand standards, budgets and tight deadlines.
  • Collaborate with project teams to conceptualize and develop creative solutions for a variety of print and digital materials. Create graphics that display transportation project, program and planning materials including concept layout designs, data visualizations, photography and all other visual elements that reflect the City's brand standard and achieve the intended results.
  • Produce print and digital design material for communication to residents & public engagement including mailers, yard signs, informational boards, doorhangers, project factsheets, custom icons, stickers, decals, infographics and maps.
  • Collaborate with project teams to design concept diagrams, cross sections and renderings for transportation projects.
  • Create new branding and visual identities for projects, programs and initiatives, including wordmarks and design assets. Work with project teams to generate ideas and determine the best visual communication strategy for specific projects.
  • Provide design support to various internal teams with templates and other standardized design materials. Develop new templates for professional reports, presentations, grant applications and other communication needs.
  • Support the division’s efforts to capture the impact of work through a strong photo library; organize and maintain the division’s photo library.
  • Coordinate with subject matter experts, project teams, and print vendor’s production specifications as well as execute in-house printing when needed. Define print parameters, review printer proofs and coordinate necessary approvals before final production.
  • Order and maintain inventory of supplies, materials and services relating to graphics from outside vendors.
