About The Position

Reporting to the Assistant Director in the Office of Student Engagement (OSE), the Graduate Assistant will support the goals of the Student Leadership, Involvement and Transition Experience. The primary focus of this role is Registered Student Organizations (RSO). The Graduate Resident Advisor will also get the opportunity to choose their own collaborations among other offices based on personal and professional goals. The Office of Student Engagement (OSE) at The New School supports the university's educational mission by fostering opportunities for meaningful engagement and connections beyond the classroom. OSE encourages students to actively participate in the university community by joining or starting a student organization, engaging in recreational activities, or attending events and programs organized by the Student Activities Board. OSE provides numerous opportunities to get involved on campus and enhance a student’s leadership potential. The GRA appointment is for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Requirements

  • Must be a full-time matriculated graduate student at The New School University.
  • Must be in good standing with the university, including the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Office of Student Accounts, and the Department of Residential Education.
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the period of employment.
  • Demonstrated crisis management, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Experience working with or engaging diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • Experience creating content for social media platforms.
  • Proficiency with content creation and design tools, including Canva, Photoshop, and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Previous experience in student leadership, residence life, student organizations, peer mentoring, orientation programs, or other campus involvement activities.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, meet deadlines, and handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Experience using technology and digital communication tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, social media platforms, event management systems, or student engagement software) to support programming, outreach, and organizational operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general support and advising for registered student organizations.
  • Coordinate the tracking and compliance of registration processes for undergraduate student organizations.
  • Support and provide communication to student organizations. This includes outreach surrounding compliance with registration, support with member/leader recruitment and retention, organizational transitions, and improving resource accessibility.
  • Provide additional support for New School Student employees in the realm of Student Success and Engagement.
  • Participate and facilitate department/unit/division activities including meetings, retreats, events, and staff development opportunities.
  • Provide a high level of customer service when interacting with students, staff, faculty, community partners, or the general public.
  • Assist and staff the in-person and virtual front desks of OSE. This includes but isn’t limited to assisting with answering telephones, filing correspondence (email, social media messages), registration for OSE events, and running errands on campus.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation and respond to student incidents as needed.
  • Participate in weekly department-wide staff meetings, weekly building staff meetings (as needed), and one-on-one with supervisor.
  • Participate in departmental events and processes such as Opening/Closing/Welcome Week, Family Weekend, student and professional staff recruitment, selection and training, residence hall tours, Admitted Students Days, Open Houses, housing selection, census implementation, room changes and any other events that may arise.

  • Assigned one (1) single bedroom within a University operated residence hall. (estimated value of $24,377 per academic year).
  • A meal plan. (estimated value of $1,775 per semester or $3,550 per academic year)
  • A stipend of $10,000 to be paid out biweekly throughout the time of employment.
