About The Position

This is a Graduate Assistant position at the Shidler College of Business / School of Travel Industry Management at the University of Manoa in Honolulu, HI. The position is for an 11-month term, part-time (50% Full Time Equivalency), and temporary. Renewal is dependent on performance, departmental needs, and/or funding availability. The role involves conducting research, analyzing data, developing machine learning methods, assisting with database and visualization tool development, preparing technical reports and manuscripts, participating in project meetings, and communicating with project partners.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled (or admitted) as a graduate student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Geography, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, databases, and computer programming.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and research manuscripts.
  • Ability to organize tasks and work independently as well as collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with transportation data collection and analysis or intelligent transportation systems.
  • Experience with machine learning, deep learning, or artificial intelligence.
  • Experience with Python, R, SQL, GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS), or related programming and data analysis tools.
  • Experience with scientific writing and conference or journal publications.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Master's degree in a related field

Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews relevant to the research projects.
  • Collect, process, integrate, and analyze large-scale transportation datasets.
  • Develop machine learning and artificial intelligence methods for pedestrian volume estimation.
  • Assist in developing databases, data processing pipelines, and online visualization tools.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports, journal manuscripts, conference papers, and research presentations.
  • Participate in project meetings.
  • Communicate and coordinate with project partners and stakeholders.
  • Perform other research-related duties as assigned.
