The Graduate Registered Nurse practices professional nursing only under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse who is physically present in the area or unit, and only while holding a current temporary practice permit. The nurse delivers safe patient care using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, and provides direct care within the scope of practice. The role also includes guiding patient and family education and the activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of care in the Medical/Surgical Unit. The Graduate Registered Nurse is accountable for care provided to assigned patients and communicates changes in patients’ clinical conditions to physicians, including cardiac monitoring, diagnostic study results, and symptoms. The nurse must respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or treatment response. The NCLEX-RN must be taken within three months of hire; the temporary Graduate Nurse Permit expires immediately if this requirement is not met, and the individual is no longer eligible to work.
