The Graduate Nurse provides safe, direct patient care in the Medical/Surgical Unit using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The role includes guiding patient and family teaching and the activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of care. The nurse is accountable for care delivered to assigned patients and communicates with physicians about changes in clinical condition, cardiac monitoring, diagnostic results, and symptoms. The nurse must respond promptly and accurately to changes in a patient's condition or response to treatment. A Graduate Registered Nurse may practice professional nursing only under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse physically present in the area or unit, and while holding a current temporary practice permit. The Graduate Nurse must take the NCLEX-RN within three months of hiring; the temporary permit expires immediately afterward, making the individual ineligible to work.
