About The Position

Join UPMC Shadyside’s Surgical Graduate Nurse Rotational Program! This program is designed for nursing school graduates in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027. Participants will rotate through various units within the hospital’s Surgical Division to gain valuable and varied experience. The program includes mentorship from experienced nurses and preceptors for each rotation. UPMC Shadyside's Surgical Service Line comprises several departments, each with a specialized surgical focus, staffed by expert nurses providing compassionate care and clinical excellence. The units include 3 Main (Thoracic Surgery), 4 Main (Surgical Oncology), 3 West (Orthopedics Surgery), 7 West (Neuro Surgical/Oncology), and 6/7 Pavilion (Med/Surg Urology). The Graduate Nurse Rotational Program (GNRP) will begin in March 2027 for Fall graduates and July 2027 for Spring graduates, lasting for 10 months. Upon completion, placements are determined through a collaborative matching process based on participant preference, Hiring Manager preference, and business need.

Requirements

  • Graduating in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 from nursing school.
  • Eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role -OR- must have a Temporary Practice Permit and commit to taking the NCLEX examination within SIX months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state.
  • Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire within one year of graduation, whichever comes first.
  • Temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void).
  • UPMC requires that GNs take licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.
