Graduate Engineering Intern - Electronics

Mayo Clinic•Rochester, MN
•Onsite

About The Position

This full-time graduate internship runs from May or June through December 2027 and is performed onsite in Rochester, Minnesota. Its purpose is to provide a graduate student with relevant engineering experience. One or more mentors will provide instruction and guidance and assess the intern’s performance. The intern will learn the procedures and processes of the Division of Engineering and assigned work unit, and complete selected engineering assignments that reinforce learning and benefit the work unit. The internship supports electrical engineering development for physiological sensing, monitoring, and therapeutic technologies, with opportunities to contribute to low-power, battery-powered, and wirelessly connected medical-device prototypes. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, the intern will work on selected components or subsystems within a broader modular platform. Assignments will be matched to the intern’s preparation, learning objectives, and project needs. Work may include designing components, developing project strategies, gathering user needs and requirements, evaluating commercial components, assembling prototype systems, performing design verification and validation, troubleshooting, and participating in design reviews.

Requirements

  • Must have received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be enrolled in or intend to enroll in a graduate degree program in an Electrical or Biomedical Engineering degree-granting program.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Applicants should attach an undergraduate transcript, current transcript, and resume or CV. A cover letter is strongly encouraged.

Nice To Haves

  • Education, experience, or interest in analog and digital circuit and system design, circuit simulation, schematic capture, and PCB layout.
  • Experience or interest in sensor interfaces or physiological signal acquisition.
  • Signal processing coursework or experience.
  • Experience with standard laboratory electronic instruments, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers; prototype assembly and debugging.
  • Experience or interest in low-power or battery-powered electronics.
  • Coursework or experience in RF wireless communications.
  • Experience or interest in embedded firmware or FPGA development and hardware/software integration.
  • Exposure to AI/ML, wireless power transfer, implantable or other medical devices, therapeutic electronics, medical device safety standards, EMC, or regulatory and agency approval activities.

Responsibilities

  • Learn the procedures and processes of the Division of Engineering and the assigned work unit.
  • Complete selected engineering assignments to reinforce learning and benefit the work unit.
  • Assist with analog and digital circuit design, simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout, and component evaluation.
  • Assemble, bring up, debug, and test electronic prototypes; document measurements and participate in design reviews.
  • Support sensor interfaces, signal acquisition, power-management circuits, or wireless-module integration, as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Support integration of electronics hardware, firmware, including HDL for FPGAs, and software.
  • Help characterize signal quality, power consumption, battery-powered operating modes, or wireless performance, as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Potentially design components, develop project strategies, gather user needs and requirements, evaluate commercial components, perform design verification and validation, and troubleshoot.
