About The Position

At Saginaw Valley State University, the Department of Nursing is committed to preparing compassionate, skilled, and practice-ready nursing professionals through academic excellence, clinical experience, and student-centered support. The Graduate Assistant – Student Success Coach supports undergraduate nursing student achievement through academic assistance, student engagement initiatives, and retention-focused programming. This position provides hands-on experience in student support services, academic coaching, professional development, and higher education collaboration within a nursing education environment. The Graduate Assistant will contribute to tutoring initiatives, student success programming, NCLEX readiness support, and faculty collaboration while developing leadership, communication, mentoring, and program coordination skills. This appointment is for a maximum of two calendar years.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Currently admitted to the SVSU Graduate Nursing Program or eligible and intending to apply upon accepting the offer.
  • Graduate programs qualifying for this position include the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or other graduate nursing programs approved by Academic Affairs.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently and collaboratively.
  • Interest in student support, nursing education, academic success initiatives, or related professional fields.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in tutoring, mentoring, coaching, or student support roles.
  • Familiarity with undergraduate nursing curriculum and NCLEX preparation strategies.
  • Experience working in healthcare, clinical education, or higher education environments.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, study groups, or student engagement activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized and group tutoring support for undergraduate nursing students.
  • Assist students in developing effective study skills, time management strategies, and academic success techniques.
  • Support NCLEX readiness preparation and clinical judgment development activities.
  • Assist with coordination and facilitation of student success workshops, study sessions, and engagement activities.
  • Help develop resources and programming that promote professional identity, student engagement, and socialization within the nursing profession.
  • Support initiatives focused on student retention, academic success, and student well-being.
  • Collaborate with nursing faculty and staff to identify and support students who may benefit from additional academic or institutional resources.
  • Maintain regular communication with faculty supervisors regarding student progress, concerns, and program needs.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, student success initiatives, and related activities as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling student and university information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
