About The Position

The primary purpose of the Graduate Assistant (GA) position is to provide essential support for departmental teaching, research, clinical training, and administrative operations. The role advances the Department’s mission while offering the GA practical, supervised experience in instructional, clinical, administrative, and research-related responsibilities. This position supports the development of the GA’s professional competencies as a future practitioner by bridging academic training with hands-on departmental experience.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as a Barry University graduate student in a master’s or doctoral program.
  • Field of study must be Counseling.
  • Must be in good academic standing and meet all departmental and university requirements for graduate assistantship eligibility.
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching, clinical skills development, research, student support, or departmental service.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear feedback and interact professionally with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, meet deadlines, and work effectively during high-volume academic periods.
  • Proficiency with common technology tools, including Microsoft Office and learning management systems such as Canvas.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling student records, assessment data, and departmental communications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with clinical skills supervision and training by observing, co-facilitating, or providing feedback on student counseling sessions under licensed faculty supervision.
  • Provide instructional support for core courses by leading discussion sections, grading assignments using established rubrics, and providing detailed feedback to students.
  • Support faculty research by conducting literature reviews, assisting with data collection, entering and analyzing data, and helping prepare manuscripts or conference presentations.
  • Prepare and maintain instructional materials, including updating course websites such as Canvas, organizing course content, and setting up audiovisual or clinical equipment for instructional delivery.
  • Manage administrative tasks for the Department, including coordinating events, maintaining student records, organizing departmental materials, and handling confidential communications appropriately.
  • Assist with new student orientation and mentorship activities by creating or updating support materials, organizing digital files, and helping coordinate activities for newly admitted students.
  • Aid in accreditation compliance by collecting, organizing, and analyzing program assessment data and student learning outcomes.
