Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Grades Foreman or Grading Lead Hand in heavy civil construction.
  • Strong understanding of grading practices, including subgrade preparation, compaction requirements, and finish grading tolerances.
  • Ability to read and interpret grading plans, elevations, and survey layout.
  • Proven ability to lead crews and operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-production environment.
  • Experience coordinating multiple pieces of equipment and operators to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing site conditions such as weather, soil conditions, and design adjustments.
  • Solid communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with Superintendents, surveyors, and other Foremen.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and hazards specific to grading operations.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned scopes of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GPS machine control is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees grading operations on site, including subgrade preparation, fine grading, shaping, and compaction to meet project specifications and tolerances.
  • Directs and coordinates crews and equipment such as dozers, graders, excavators, and compactors to ensure efficient workflow and productivity.
  • Reads and interprets grading plans, survey stakes, elevations, and GPS machine control systems to guide field operations accurately.
  • Works closely with surveyors and Superintendents to confirm grades, slopes, and layout prior to and during construction.
  • Monitors daily production targets and adjusts crew and equipment allocation to stay on schedule.
  • Ensures all grading work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, and project standards. Identifies and addresses any discrepancies early.
  • Enforces company policies, procedures, and safety standards, ensuring all crew members follow safe work practices at all times.
  • Conducts daily tailboard meetings, site inspections, and hazard assessments specific to grading operations.
  • Coordinates with other Foremen and trades to maintain workflow and avoid conflicts or delays between phases of work.
  • Orders and schedules materials such as fill, aggregates, and topsoil, ensuring proper quantities and timing for production needs.
  • Inspects work in progress and completed work to ensure proper compaction, elevation, and finish tolerances are achieved.
  • Communicates clearly with crew members, providing direction, feedback, and coaching to support performance and development.
  • Assists the Superintendent with short-term planning and sequencing of grading activities.
  • Maintains accurate daily records including cost codes, quantities, and production tracking.
  • Supports project completion by taking ownership of site performance and identifying opportunities for improved efficiency.
  • Represents the company professionally in interactions with inspectors, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Participates in daily and weekly production and planning meetings.
  • Promotes a strong safety culture and maintains a clean and organized work environment.
