About The Position

The Grading Foreman is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all grading and earthwork activities on heavy civil construction projects. This position provides direct oversight of crews, equipment operators, truck drivers, and subcontractors performing site preparation, excavation, embankment construction, fine grading, road construction, utility preparation, and related earthmoving operations. The Grading Foreman ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project plans, specifications, quality requirements, environmental regulations, and production schedules. The position serves as the primary field leader for grading operations and works closely with Superintendents, Project Managers, Engineers, Surveyors, Utility Foremen, and Safety personnel to achieve project objectives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 5-10 years of heavy civil construction experience
  • Experience with large-scale earthwork, site development, highways, transportation, industrial, utility, dam, reservoir, renewable energy, or infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of grading techniques, compaction requirements, erosion control, and utility coordination.
  • Experience operating and supervising heavy earthmoving equipment.
  • Familiarity with GPS machine control systems and construction surveying practices.
  • Strong leadership and crew management skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of grading and earthwork operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of cut/fill balancing and earthmoving logistics.
  • Knowledge of GPS machine control and grade control systems.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple crews and equipment resources simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct grading crews, operators, laborers, truck drivers, and subcontractors.
  • Plan daily and weekly grading activities to achieve production goals and project milestones.
  • Coordinate mass excavation, embankment construction, rough grading, fine grading, and roadway preparation activities.
  • Assign personnel and equipment to maximize productivity and efficiency.
  • Monitor project schedules and adjust resources as needed to maintain progress.
  • Ensure grading activities are sequenced properly with utility, drainage, paving, and structural operations.
  • Read and interpret grading plans, profiles, cross-sections, utility drawings, and project specifications.
  • Verify grading elevations, slopes, drainage patterns, and finished grades meet project requirements.
  • Coordinate with survey crews regarding layout, staking, GPS machine control systems, and grade verification.
  • Perform routine grade checks using laser levels, GPS systems, total stations, and surveying equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with compaction requirements, density testing, and material specifications.
  • Identify and resolve grade conflicts, utility conflicts, and constructability issues.
  • Coordinate the utilization of excavators, dozers, motor graders, scrapers, loaders, compactors, haul trucks, water trucks, and support equipment.
  • Monitor production rates and adjust equipment deployment to optimize performance.
  • Track quantities moved, installed, and completed.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and communicate repair needs.
  • Minimize downtime through proactive planning and resource management.
  • Evaluate haul routes, cut/fill balance, and material movement strategies.
  • Conduct daily pre-task planning and job hazard analyses.
  • Lead daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Enforce company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor excavation safety, trenching operations, heavy equipment operations, traffic control, and work zone safety.
  • Stop work when unsafe conditions exist.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
  • Collaborate with Superintendents, Project Managers, Engineers, Surveyors, Inspectors, and Owners.
  • Coordinate work activities with utility, concrete, paving, drainage, and structure crews.
  • Attend planning meetings and provide production updates.
  • Document field progress and communicate project challenges.
  • Assist in resolving field conflicts and unforeseen site conditions.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with clients, inspectors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPP).
  • Monitor erosion and sediment control measures.
  • Maintain environmental compliance during earthwork operations.
  • Coordinate dust control and water management activities.
  • Ensure proper handling of environmentally sensitive materials and areas.
