About The Position

The AI Governance Lead will help a large federal agency responsibly adopt artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in support of its mission. The role assists with developing enterprise policies, governance frameworks, and implementation guidance that enable innovation while addressing operational, legal, privacy, civil rights, and security considerations. Working across technology, policy, and mission delivery, the Governance Lead advises federal executives and collaborates with technical teams to turn complex requirements into clear, actionable guidance. The role builds consensus across a decentralized organization and guides governance initiatives from initial concept through enterprise adoption. The position supports enterprise AI policy development; designs governance processes and decision structures; translates federal requirements into practical implementation guidance; and develops approaches for emerging AI capabilities, including generative AI, AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation, third-party models, and AI embedded in enterprise applications. It connects policy to technical practices, facilitates executive alignment, and measures governance effectiveness through performance measures, adoption and compliance assessments, operational feedback, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

10 or more years of experience in technology governance, technology policy, enterprise risk, or digital transformation.
3 or more years of experience in AI governance or AI policy.
Experience assisting in leading enterprise technology policy or governance initiatives for a federal agency or complex, regulated organization.
Experience assisting with authoring and implementing AI policies, standards, governance frameworks, or operational guidance.
Experience advising senior executives and assisting with concise, decision-oriented briefings, policy documents, and recommendations.
Experience designing governance structures and processes, including review boards, risk assessments, approval criteria, accountability models, and exception management.
Knowledge of AI and generative AI capabilities, limitations, and risks, including model evaluation, data quality, bias, explainability, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring.
Ability to interpret federal policy and oversight requirements and translate them into clear responsibilities, decision processes, and implementation expectations.
Ability to coordinate across technical teams, mission organizations, and oversight functions to resolve issues and implement enterprise guidance.
Ability to lead complex initiatives independently, manage competing priorities, and influence stakeholders across organizational boundaries.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements.
Bachelor’s degree.

Knowledge of model and use case inventories, model registries, evaluation frameworks, AI monitoring, and governance platforms.
Master’s degree in AI governance, technology policy, public administration, risk management, program management, or organizational change.
Certification related to AI governance, technology policy, public administration, risk management, program management, or organizational change.

Responsibilities

Assist in developing and maintaining enterprise policies, standards, procedures, and implementation guidance for the acquisition, development, deployment, use, monitoring, and retirement of AI and emerging technologies.
Design governance processes, including decision rights, review boards, approval workflows, escalation paths, and exception processes.
Assess applicable federal requirements and agency priorities, identify gaps, and coordinate with legal, privacy, civil rights, cybersecurity, acquisition, and technology stakeholders to develop actionable guidance.
Develop governance approaches for generative AI, AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation, third-party models, and AI embedded in enterprise applications, including expectations for human oversight, evaluation, and acceptable use.
Partner with engineering, architecture, data, and cloud teams to define implementable requirements for AI inventories and model registries, evaluation, access controls, guardrails, monitoring, and supporting evidence.
Facilitate working groups, resolve competing stakeholder priorities, and prepare executive briefings, decision memoranda, and recommendations explaining options, tradeoffs, and mission implications.
Establish performance measures, assess governance adoption and compliance, identify implementation barriers, and recommend improvements based on operational feedback, assessments, and technology changes.
Support communication, training, or organizational change strategies that promote adoption of new policies and technology practices.
