About The Position

Under general direction, the Golf Chief Mechanic manages a complex equipment maintenance shop, oversees equipment records systems, and plans and schedules maintenance and repair activities. The position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and diagnosing gasoline, diesel, and electric turf equipment including mowers, tractors, golf carts, and handheld tools used at municipal golf facilities.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance, operation, and repair, including two‑cycle and four‑cycle engine systems.
  • Knowledge of equipment specification writing and procurement procedures for competitive bidding.
  • Knowledge of EPA and TCEQ regulations regarding chemical solvents and lubricants, including safe storage, use, and disposal.
  • Knowledge of shop and office management principles necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of basic budgeting concepts.
  • Skill in recordkeeping, filing, and coordinating large inventories of shop supplies, equipment parts, and vehicles.
  • Skill in planning, scheduling, directing, and supervising the work of others.
  • Skill in diagnosing mechanical problems and performing repairs or part replacements.
  • Ability to research equipment design, performance, and operator requirements to meet service needs.
  • Ability to apply appropriate interpersonal skills to maintain positive working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to work in environments exposed to dust, dirt, grease, chemicals, fumes/odors, extreme heat, extreme cold, and loud noise.
  • Ability to lift parts, tools, and equipment up to 100 pounds daily.
  • High school diploma with two years of vocational or technical training.
  • Three years of proven experience in automotive, drivetrain, golf course, or turf equipment repair, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Criminal background check.
  • Drug and alcohol testing.
  • Physical/Human Performance Evaluation (HPE).
  • Motor Vehicle Review.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire shop operation and records system, including vendor coordination, purchasing activities, equipment specifications, maintenance schedules, equipment performance, parts inventory, staff training, and hazardous‑waste control.
  • Diagnoses equipment problems and manages repairs and service schedules for a wide range of fleet, field, turf, and handheld equipment such as mowers, trucks, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, chemical applicators, string trimmers, chain saws, and power blowers.
  • Ensures all equipment, particularly cutting mechanisms, is sharpened, calibrated, and maintained to support high‑quality turf standards.
  • Operates specialized diagnostic and repair equipment such as engine analyzers, emissions testing tools, pumps, motors, and hand tools; also operates the machinery and vehicles being repaired.
  • Directs and evaluates the work of apprentice mechanics and trains equipment operators in equipment use, care, preventive maintenance, and safe operation.
  • Works effectively with staff and the public, providing information, assistance, and resolution of concerns related to equipment used at the golf facilities.
  • Plans, coordinates, and schedules special programs such as operator safety training, vendor demonstrations, equipment orientation, and Total Productive Maintenance programs.
