About The Position

This is entrance level Geographic Information System (GIS) work. An employee in this class functions in a support capacity performing mapping, data maintenance, data collection, research, drafting, plans review and field survey work in conjunction with the various phases of information systems management. Works under general supervision exercising independence in the use of judgment and ingenuity. Work is reviewed for completeness and accuracy. Duties may require working in inclement weather.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in geographic information systems, information systems, geography, surveying, cartography or a related field or an equivalent combination of GIS paid experience and related education.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
  • Basic knowledge of the methods and techniques of map compilation, cartographic principals and GIS software programs.
  • Knowledge of techniques used to develop and design GIS output.
  • Knowledge of manual and computerized drafting procedures, materials, tools and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of mapping practices, equations, signs and symbols.
  • Ability to compile, interpret and apply data for GIS, construction regulations, plans and specifications.
  • Ability to prepare drawings and data in a neat, efficient and accurate manner.
  • Ability to effectively operate standard mapping, drafting and surveying equipment.
  • Ability to perform basic cartographic, engineering, mathematical calculations and computations common to engineering, planning and construction related projects.
  • Ability to effectively maintain computerized records and prepare accurate and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain courteous, tactful and effective public relations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine work in the development and updating of the Geographic Information System (GIS) database.
  • Performs routine updates to layers of the GIS database.
  • Performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Participates in the development of the city's GIS.
  • Compiles data for input into the system; develops, edits and automates data layers.
  • Assists with implementing and developing procedures for using GIS software.
  • Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.
  • Oversees or performs field checks as assigned.
  • Responds to inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Answers questions from the general public on city activities and assists in handling of data requests from the public.
  • Performs related work as required.
