GIS Manager
About The Position
Royal is seeking a GIS Manager to lead its geographic information systems program and oversee GIS staff, spatial data, mapping, and technology. The role combines team leadership with hands-on technical work to support project delivery, improve data quality, and make geospatial information accessible to project teams and clients. The GIS Manager works with project managers, engineers, project scientists, and other stakeholders to define GIS needs, establish consistent workflows, and deliver accurate maps, analyses, and applications within project budgets and schedules. The position is primarily office-based and may require occasional travel to project sites, client offices, or company locations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, geomatics, environmental science, engineering, computer science, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible GIS experience, including at least 2 years leading staff, projects, or GIS operations.
- Strong proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and experience with ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Experience managing geodatabases, performing spatial analysis, and producing clear, accurate maps and deliverables.
- Working knowledge of coordinate systems, projections, data conversion, metadata, and GIS quality control.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, estimate effort, and deliver work within agreed budgets and schedules.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain GIS methods and results to technical and nontechnical audiences.
Nice To Haves
- Experience supporting civil engineering, flood protection, drainage, utilities, transportation, environmental, or public-sector projects.
- Experience with LiDAR, digital elevation models, raster analysis, terrain modeling, and survey or CAD data integration.
- Experience with Python or ArcPy, SQL, enterprise databases, and GIS workflow automation.
- Experience administering ArcGIS Enterprise, publishing services, or managing web and mobile GIS applications.
- Experience with Field Maps, Survey123, Dashboards, Experience Builder, or comparable tools.
- GIS Professional (GISP) certification or another relevant professional credential.
Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day GIS operations; assign work, set priorities, and review deliverables.
- Develop and maintain GIS standards for data organization, coordinate systems, metadata, cartography, and quality assurance and quality control.
- Manage spatial databases and geodatabases, including data collection, editing, validation, versioning, and integration with other systems.
- Oversee the creation of maps, spatial analyses, web maps, dashboards, and applications using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Coordinate with project teams to define scope, estimate effort, manage schedules and budgets, and communicate progress.
- Support engineering, environmental, and disaster recovery projects with terrain analysis, LiDAR and elevation data, imagery, infrastructure mapping, and other geospatial datasets.
- Develop field data collection workflows using tools such as ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123; coordinate field and office data integration.
- Improve recurring workflows through automation using Python, ArcPy, ModelBuilder, or other appropriate tools.
- Coordinate with IT on GIS software, licensing, user access, deployment, data protection, and system performance.
- Provide training and technical support; maintain documentation; support proposals; and plan GIS services.
