About The Position

Under the direction of the Deputy Information Technology Director, the GIS Coordinator's primary role is to plan and coordinate citywide geographical information systems including, but not limited to, program development, implementation, maintenance, training, and support. The GIS Coordinator is responsible for reading, interpreting, and verifying data contained in source documents, such as civil engineering plans and plot maps; entering required data into the GIS; the long-term development and enhancement of GIS information technology to meet mapping and end user service objectives; GIS modelling; and providing expertise, support, assistance, and guidance to staff and external contacts.

  • Symbols and terminology used in civil, architectural, or electronic engineering drawing.
  • CityWorks or other GIS-centric asset management software used to perform inspection, monitoring, and condition assessment preferred.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, accuracy, time management, and critical thinking skills.
  • Using tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Civic engagement and customer service.
  • Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and concepts such as ESRI ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS for Desktop, Python, and Internet development tools.

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Four (4) or more years related experience in the design and development of GIS systems or other closely related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license and ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Any combination of training and experience which will indicate the possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed below.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, programs, and tests GIS and Cityworks applications and executables using appropriate programming languages.
  • Develops short and long-range goals to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness for GIS and Cityworks development and integrations.
  • Develops, administers, and maintains GIS and Cityworks web sites and applications, and performs continuous updates of core City GIS and Cityworks data and web site information.
  • Continually improves operations, decreases turnaround times, and streamlines work processes.
  • Coordinates and oversees various special projects and/or graphics for presentations in support of the GIS and Cityworks system, and tracks time-sensitive projects and assignments to ensure timely completion.
  • Prepares and reviews written documents pertaining to GIS and Cityworks to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains fields and enforces GIS and Cityworks database standards in coordination with other City departments.
  • Communicates with the public, vendors, contractors, GIS and Cityworks users, and management to determine current and future needs, and provides recommendations about equipment, software, hardware, etc.
  • Develops and provides GIS and Cityworks standards, training, and guidance for GIS and Cityworks users within the City.
  • Designs digital maps with geographic data and other data sources.
  • Builds and/or publishes live GIS maps for display or report purposes.
  • Integrates programming, mapping, and cartography.
  • Converts and manipulates graphics and different database file structures.
  • Utilizes data information for query and analysis purposes.
  • Utilizes ArcGIS for Server and/or ArcGIS Online to develop and maintain a customized Internet website for GIS.
  • Uses ArcGIS software to create, manage, and maintain existing GIS database and web access for developing and sharing web and mapping applications for users.
  • Maps a flow of data from departments and access to centralized SQL database.
  • Develops and maintains ArcGIS for Server and/or ArcGIS Online customized web applications for end users to query data and create their own maps and reports.
  • Specifies end user needs and data management structure for maximum efficiency for sharing data across large network of GIS users.
  • Participates in regional and state GIS professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
