About The Position

The Girls Varsity Hockey Coach is responsible for instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. The role also emphasizes the development of moral values, pride in accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence in student-athletes. The coach works under the overall direction of the athletic director and in conjunction with the high school principal.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Andover School Committee.
  • Knowledge of existing system, league, and state regulations.
  • Understanding of the proper administrative line of command.
  • Ability to train and inform staff.
  • Ability to delegate specific duties and supervise implementation.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and increase morale and cooperation.
  • Ability to assist in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Ability to prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Ability to coordinate program activities with maintenance and school employees.
  • Ability to provide proper safeguards for equipment and sites.
  • Ability to advise the athletic director and recommend policy changes.
  • Ability to provide training rules and sport-specific regulations to athletes.
  • Ability to give constant attention to student-athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Ability to provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards to participants.
  • Ability to initiate programs and work with the athletic trainer concerning injuries.
  • Ability to complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries.
  • Ability to direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Ability to determine discipline and establish due process procedures.
  • Ability to contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Ability to assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
  • Ability to participate in budgeting and establish requirements for the next season.
  • Ability to recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Accountability for all equipment and collection of costs for lost or unreturned items.
  • Ability to work with the equipment manager on issuing, storing, and reconditioning equipment.
  • Ability to ensure equipment is properly marked.
  • Ability to monitor equipment storage and authorize access.
  • Ability to ensure athletes are in authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Ability to examine locker rooms for cleanliness.
  • Responsibility for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Ability to secure building facilities.
  • Ability to instill respect for equipment and school property.
  • Ability to organize parents, coaches, and players for pre-season meetings.
  • Ability to maintain good public relations.
  • Ability to present information to news media.

Responsibilities

  • Implement approved athletic policies and regulations.
  • Interpret and consistently implement system, league, and state regulations.
  • Adhere to the proper administrative line of command and refer requests through appropriate channels.
  • Establish and communicate the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques for the sport, aligning with the athletic department's philosophy.
  • Conduct staff meetings to ensure all coaches understand the overall program.
  • Train and inform assistant coaches, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance.
  • Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness at the end of the season.
  • Assist the athletic director in evaluating assistant coaches.
  • Maintain discipline, morale, and cooperation within the team and staff.
  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility schedules.
  • Coordinate program activities with maintenance and school employees through the athletic office.
  • Ensure proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and sites.
  • Advise the athletic director on policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Provide athletes with training rules and sport-specific regulations.
  • Monitor student-athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards to participants during practices, games, and travel.
  • Initiate programs and collaborate with the athletic trainer regarding injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete and submit paperwork for all disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, establish due process procedures, and contact parents regarding ineligibility or dropping from the team.
  • Assist athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
  • Participate in budgeting by establishing requirements for the next season.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Account for all equipment and collect costs for lost or unreturned items.
  • Work with the equipment manager on issuing, storing, and reconditioning equipment, and submit annual inventory and records.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly marked before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment storage, authorize access to equipment, and manage requisitions.
  • Ensure athletes are only in authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms for cleanliness before and after practices/games.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure building facilities (doors, lights, windows, locks) when custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property in players.
  • Organize parents, coaches, and players for pre-season meetings.
  • Maintain positive public relations with the news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to the news media regarding schedules, tournaments, and contest results.
