We are looking for a Manager, Learning and Development to join our team in one of our Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal offices. The successful candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in designing, developing, and implementing professional training programs, preferably in the legal or professional services sector. They will be responsible for designing and implementing innovative professional development programs for lawyers, leading AI-based learning initiatives, collaborating with firm leaders and subject matter experts to improve training programs, evaluating program effectiveness, and overseeing the successful execution of MT Academy programs. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Bachelor's degree, combined with five years of experience in training program development and implementation.
  • Experience in legal practice or experience working collaboratively with lawyers in a non-law firm setting.
  • Solid experience in designing, implementing, and managing professional development programs for legal professionals (lawyers and/or paralegals).
  • Proven professional experience in instructional design and experience working with teaching technologies, including knowledge of adult learning theories and design models, lesson and curriculum planning, strong proficiency in course creation software, visual design skills, and the ability to write instructional text and audio/video scripts.
  • Proficiency in relevant instructional design technologies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ease in addressing groups of students and lawyers in programs or meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ease in working with lawyers, clients, and staff, both individually and as part of a team.
  • High degree of customer service orientation and ability to solve problems independently and practically.
  • Strong initiative, exceptional organizational and time management skills, and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain a fast pace and manage multiple competing demands under pressure by prioritizing, demonstrating practicality, and being results-oriented.
  • High attention to accuracy and detail, as well as good numerical skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a law firm or other professional services firm is highly valued.
  • A certificate or training in instructional design is an asset.
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
  • High flexibility, including regarding lunch, arrival, and departure times, as well as the possibility of working evenings during peak periods.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and continuously improve national lawyer training programs within the framework of mt L’Académie, including those for students, associates, non-equity partners, and equity partners, as well as experiential learning retreats specifically organized for certain groups of lawyers.
  • With the support of the Director of mt L’Académie, design, develop, and continuously improve national leadership and business development programs for lawyers at all stages of their careers (from student to partner), and oversee their execution within the professional development programs of mt L’Académie covering all stages of lawyers' careers, in support of the MT Career Path.
  • Lead the design and development of retreats for targeted groups of associates, including cohorts defined by year of call, practice group, career stage, or high potential/path to leadership role; establish the learning objectives for these retreats and the courses and experiences to be offered; and select trainers and content in collaboration with the Director of mt L’Académie and the Head of the MT Career Path Office.
  • Ensure the smooth running of these retreats, providing direction to trainers and facilitators and ensuring participants have a high-quality experience, and oversee the end-to-end execution of these events, including collaborating with internal stakeholders and vendors on logistics, budget, venue selection, and execution. Evaluate each retreat against intended outcomes to guide continuous improvement.
  • Leverage expertise and leadership to ensure the training program remains innovative, at the forefront of the market, and aligned with the Firm's career path structure.
  • Contribute to the mt L’Académie program by participating in the development of learning objectives and course design aimed at imparting legal knowledge and practice-related skills in all practice areas, as needed.
  • Ensure programs are results-oriented, aligned with defined competencies and learning objectives, and compliant with best practices in adult and professional training.
  • Design and develop training solutions using various methods and delivery formats, including in-person training, virtual training, blended learning, simulations, assessments, and on-demand tools.
  • Collaborate with the Director of mt L’Académie, internal managers, and external experts to define priorities, select content, and choose high-quality trainers.
  • Lead discussions on program scope and planning with stakeholders and trainers to outline the program, determine learning objectives, and create materials.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to trainers on content development, delivery methods, and alignment with program objectives.
  • Conduct needs assessments to identify performance gaps and emerging skill needs within the legal profession.
  • In collaboration with the Director of mt L’Académie and the Head of the MT Career Path Office, identify essential human skills impacted by the increasing use of AI in legal practice, and contribute to the design and development of learning solutions to strengthen these skills throughout lawyers' careers.
  • Develop and implement evaluation frameworks and metrics to measure program effectiveness and impact against defined learning objectives.
  • Stay abreast of trends in legal training, instructional design, facilitation, and online learning.
  • Propose new ideas and approaches to keep mt L’Académie programs innovative, competitive, and aligned with best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Head of the MT Career Path Office and the Director of mt L’Académie for the coordination and implementation of AI-assisted training. This includes, but is not limited to, the following functions:
  • Support and advance AI-based learning initiatives across all mt L’Académie programs by integrating client service delivery workflows and tools into curriculum design to enhance practice readiness and client outcomes.
  • Work closely with the Client Service Delivery team and mt L’Académie to integrate AI-optimized workflows into lawyer training, ensuring alignment between evolving legal service delivery models and mt L’Académie programs.
  • Translate Client Service Delivery team workflows into effective learning experiences, integrating them into program design through practical, scenario-based, and experiential learning approaches.
  • Design and integrate AI-enhanced learning experiences (e.g., AI-assisted simulations, intelligent coaching tools, adaptive learning platforms) that promote workflow adoption while maintaining a clear focus on learning objectives and skill development.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate AI tools into instructional design, facilitation, and learner engagement to improve scalability, personalization, and overall program effectiveness, while ensuring integration with established workflows.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of external strategic AI learning initiatives, including supporting partnerships with law schools and building talent pipelines to develop AI literacy and workflow understanding.
  • Support collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to integrate concrete workflows and client scenarios into training content, ensuring it is both practice-relevant and aligned with the Firm's strategy.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of mt L’Académie, manage the day-to-day operational activities of the mt L’Académie Coordinator, who is their direct report, working effectively with them to achieve set goals and objectives, including assigning and overseeing tasks, and collaborating with colleagues from mt L’Académie, the MT Career Path Office, and other functional groups.
