Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) Graduate Program Intern

City of RedmondRedmond, WA
Onsite

About The Position

The City of Redmond is seeking a graduate-level GIS intern to help improve the reliability and completeness of the City's utility GIS datasets. Working alongside our Senior GIS Analyst, you will research, field-verify, and analyze missing asset attributes across the City's water and wastewater systems—including hydrants, valves, service lines, and manholes. This focused effort will close known data gaps such as missing installation years, materials, sizes, and elevations, directly strengthening the City's asset management program, capital planning, and day-to-day operational decision-making. This is a hands-on opportunity to apply GIS analysis, historical records research, and field verification to real infrastructure data that serves an entire community. It is well suited to a student pursuing a degree in GIS, geography, civil or environmental engineering, urban planning, or a related field who wants meaningful, applied experience in local government. To be considered, candidates must currently be enrolled and attending graduate school.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled and attending graduate school
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to research projects, present conclusions
  • Ability to solve problems

  • Experience with GIS software—particularly Esri ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online—preferred
  • Familiarity with utility or infrastructure data, record drawings, or asset management concepts preferred, if applicable
  • Software or database specific to field of interest preferred, if applicable

Responsibilities

  • Research historical records, as-builts, and record drawings to identify and populate missing asset attributes (e.g., installation year, manufacturer, material, size, and elevation) for water and wastewater GIS datasets
  • Perform GIS-based analysis and spatial comparisons with nearby infrastructure to derive likely attribute values where direct records are incomplete
  • Conduct field verification of water and wastewater assets—including hydrants, valves, and manholes—to confirm and capture attribute data
  • Update and maintain GIS feature datasets, applying consistent QA/QC to ensure data integrity
  • Document research methods, assumptions, and confidence levels to support asset management and capital planning decisions
  • May lead a discrete project or asset class as assigned
  • Duties and responsibilities vary depending upon the department and nature of the work
  • Work should relate to projects or assignments that are appropriate for the experience level and degree or field of interest of the student
