Requirements

BS degree and a minimum of 5-10 years experience are typically required.
Experience using aseptic technique and working in a biosafety level 2 laboratory.
Experience in the use of an array of molecular biology instrumentation, including modern sequencing equipment and quantitative- or digital-PCR.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

MS degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, biology, or associated technical discipline and three years related experience, or a Ph.D. degree in microbiology, biology, or associated technical discipline.

Responsibilities

Help sample and analyze microbiological communities inside the Astromaterials Collection Cleanrooms.
Grow, isolate, and identify microbes from diverse locations.
Perform high-throughput DNA extraction and sequencing of microbial communities.
Analyze microbiome data from diverse environments.
Oversee lab procedures and activities.
Train lab personnel on lab procedures, instrument use, and sample handling techniques.
Maintain laboratory documentation and prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for new lab processes.
Summarize and communicate results to project lead/manager and contribute to abstracts, presentations, peer reviewed journal articles, and grant proposals.
Sustain a safety-first laboratory culture with particular emphasis on chemical and biological safety.
Take part regular domestic and international meetings (remotely and in-person) and telecons.
Perform other duties as required.
