Requirements

  • BS degree and a minimum of 5-10 years experience are typically required.
  • Experience using aseptic technique and working in a biosafety level 2 laboratory.
  • Experience in the use of an array of molecular biology instrumentation, including modern sequencing equipment and quantitative- or digital-PCR.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, biology, or associated technical discipline and three years related experience, or a Ph.D. degree in microbiology, biology, or associated technical discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Help sample and analyze microbiological communities inside the Astromaterials Collection Cleanrooms.
  • Grow, isolate, and identify microbes from diverse locations.
  • Perform high-throughput DNA extraction and sequencing of microbial communities.
  • Analyze microbiome data from diverse environments.
  • Oversee lab procedures and activities.
  • Train lab personnel on lab procedures, instrument use, and sample handling techniques.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation and prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for new lab processes.
  • Summarize and communicate results to project lead/manager and contribute to abstracts, presentations, peer reviewed journal articles, and grant proposals.
  • Sustain a safety-first laboratory culture with particular emphasis on chemical and biological safety.
  • Take part regular domestic and international meetings (remotely and in-person) and telecons.
  • Perform other duties as required.
