About The Position

WSP is seeking a Geologist for its Southern California Region (Irvine, San Diego, Los Angeles) to join its Earth & Environment Team. The role involves providing local technical assistance for collecting, identifying, and compiling engineering geology data, generating accurate documentation, and ensuring responsibilities are met with high-quality standards. The position offers opportunities to collaborate on exciting projects within a growing organization and access to a network of resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or a closely related discipline.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working as a Geologist.
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Out-of-town travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Geology or closely related discipline is preferred.
  • Geologist-in-Training (GIT)
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER safety training
  • Relevant skills including understanding of geohazards, geomorphology and surface processes.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Support large and small, diverse projects with services including geohazard identification and characterization, field reconnaissance, subsurface investigation, engineering design, construction support, and hazard monitoring.
  • Perform routine field work related to site explorations including geologic mapping, soil and rock sampling and logging, soil classification, rock coring, preparing boring logs, geologic maps, and geologic cross sections, under general supervision.
  • Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of field work permitting.
  • Write technical reports summarizing background research with findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebooks.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory documentation, and logbooks.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
