You will serve as a Geologist in a term position with an initial appointment expected to last at least 13 months. The appointment may be extended up to a total of four years, or longer if regulations permit, at management’s discretion and without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. First-time Federal hires normally start at step 1; a 1.49% cost-of-living allowance is authorized. The position supports Alaska mineral-resource science through maintaining and publishing an occurrence database, conducting field investigations, mapping mineral occurrences, developing data portals, and disseminating information through data releases, presentations, and other channels. Field work may involve remote locations and demanding terrain and environmental conditions. The duties are suitable for telework, which may be allowed with supervisor approval. The position is at the GS-12 level. Applicants must meet the geology education requirement and have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11. Education cannot substitute for the experience requirement. The appointment includes a one-year probationary period, during which continued employment is subject to agency evaluation and written certification.
