About The Position

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) is seeking a dedicated individual to protect and preserve Maryland's air, water, and land resources, and safeguard the health of its citizens. This role within the Land and Materials Administration's Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) involves reviewing and evaluating conditions of known or suspected contamination to determine the necessary extent of remediation. The position oversees activities at VCP and Controlled Hazardous Substances (CHS) sites, requiring independent evaluation of consultant work and review of technical documents to ensure site assessments and remediations meet standards for protecting human health and the environment. Responsibilities include drafting formal correspondence, such as letters, comments on applications and response plans, and site closure documents.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.
  • Three years of experience performing professional geological work.
  • A valid driver’s license with no more than five points is required to operate a State vehicle.
  • If you hold an out-of-state license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of appointment.

  • Experience reviewing Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Experience reviewing Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate conditions of known or suspected contamination to determine the necessary extent of remediation.
